Ultra Street Fighter IV battle: Cody (SupremeCream9000) vs Rose (jettFTW)

I probably should have guarded my chin better against the #10 Cody on PSN.

Excellence of Execution

Decapre cr.MK into HandsClick click clack! Click click clack! Click click clack!

This is the sound that my fightstick makes as I practice Decapre’s crouching medium kick into heavy Rapid Slash combo. It’s only two moves long, and one of those moves can be triggered by simply mashing a single button, yet I’m weeks into my practice and can only land it about 50% of the time against a stationary dummy. What makes this two move combo so difficult?

Ultra Street Fighter IV battle: Dudley (CasterMurdoc) vs Rolento (jettFTW)

Rolento might be a flavour of the month thanks in part to Nemo’s phenomenal play in the tournament scene, but the character clearly has its flaws. In particular, he can get dominated in close by offensive-oriented characters, such as Dudley. Still, I try my best to hang in tough against this highly-ranked opponent.

The Return of Street Fighter X Tekken?

In a recent interview with Famtisu.com, Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono had some interesting things to say about the future of Street Fighter X Tekken.

Ono: In Street Fighter X Tekken’s case, if we’re able to get just a little more development budget allocated to the project, I think we might release one more patch for the game. We’ve even got the details of what we’d change in the patch planned out.

Tsubaki: Is that so!? But in all honesty, what I’m hoping for here is a sequel to the game. After all, even with Capcom vs. SNK, it wasn’t until CvS2 that it became a huge hit. Even today it’s still hailed as an incredible fighting game. So I was hoping for a similar development to happen with Street Fighter X Tekken.

Ono: That’s what I’ve always been telling the company too. But at the end of the day, there are just some brick walls that a salaryman can never overcome *laughs*. For instance, if a game doesn’t sell over 2 million copies, then we’d have to put the brakes on any plans for a sequel. All that means is that we weren’t capable enough. And all we can do after that is to reflect on the experience, take what we can learn from it, and try to apply those lessons on some other title.

Having thought that the game died a long time ago, it’s interesting to see anything about it now. Does the franchise deserve another shot?

Ultra Street Fighter IV battle: Rolento (Saint-Seiya_III) vs Rolento (jettFTW)

I don’t like playing the Rolento mirror match. It basically boils down to two circus acrobats trying to trick each other with the same tricks. Posted this one because Saint-Seiya_III clearly thought he had me beat after the first round. Karma at its finest.

Ultra Street Fighter IV battle: Rose (EG Justin Wong) vs Rose/Rolento (jettFTW)

Oh my goodness! It’s not every day you get an opportunity to fight the legendary Justin Wong. Having idolized him ever since I discovered the competitive fighting game scene, this was basically the equivalent of me playing Michael Jordan in one-on-one basketball. I’ve got my direct footage from my console above, though you can also watch our fights from Justin’s perspective. He talked some smack after that first match, but maybe he spoke too soon. 😉

jett vs jwongGG Justin! Thanks for the matches! I hope we can run it back to settle the score once and for all!

Ultra Street Fighter IV: Decapre Crouching Medium Kick into Hard Punch Rapid Slash Tutorial

This fundamental Decapre combo took me forever to learn, as it requires the use of the piano rolling input technique. I break it down in a way that makes sense for me in hopes that it’ll make sense for you too! Hope this helps you master one of her bread and butter combos while developing a transferable input skill in the process!

Analyzing My Worst Match-Ups As a Rose Player in Street Fighter IV

One of the least talked about features in the Street Fighter IV series of games is the way in which it tracks your progress. Not only does it track your wins and losses, but it also tracks your winning percentage on a per-character basis. This way, players can see how successful their main character is against the rest of the cast.

Over the years, the game has a lot of data around how I play the game. In between Xbox and PlayStation versions of the game, I’ve invested over 2,000 hours of my life into this. In particular, there’s a wealth of Rose data in there that could prove handy. For the purposes of this post, I only took a screen grab of my 10 worst match-ups on PSN, though I don’t think my Xbox numbers would veer too much from this. It’s also a sample size of close to 4,000 matches, so I think this on its own will be good to work with. Let’s check out the skeletons in my closet.

The New #1 Ranked Rose Player In The World Is…

IMG_3477

Me.

After five years and four major revisions to the game, I reached #1 in the world on the Ultra Street Fighter IV Rose leaderboards on PSN. This does not mean I’m the best Rose player in the world, but it’s certainly a validation of all the work I put into becoming a better Street Fighter player. I never really set out to reach this milestone, but when I came within striking distance, I decided to go for it.

I may not hold onto this spot for long. If I were to lose it, I may never reach the top again. However, being able to reach this milestone for even an instant is worth a pat on the back. Besides, how often can anyone say that they are or were actually #1 in the world at anything?
