The Guilty Gear -Strive- Beta Is a Mess, But One Aspect of the Experience Deserves Rave Reviews

During the last Guilty Gear -Strive- beta, I flagged a number of major complaints with the game’s online experience.

  1. The beta was wildly unstable. Outages happened for hours at a time, leaving many anxious fans out in the cold.
  2. The Habbo Hotel inspired lobby system was an absolutely horrible way of connecting with other players.
  3. Combat was driven by inferior delay-based netcode. Fights suffered from inputs getting delayed, which compromised the integrity of battle.

This time around, things are…different.

  1. The beta is again, wildly unstable. Arc System Works extended the beta to compensate for lost time.
  2. Despite overwhelming negative feedback from the community regarding the Hobbo Hotel style lobby system, Arc System Works kept it in the game. At least you can matchmake through training mode in the beta.
  3. Delay-based netcode was replaced with rollback netcode. And…

My Favourite Guns in Rogue Company

Each rogue in Rogue Company possesses a number of unique abilities and gadgets to set themselves apart from the competition. Some of these attributes can be real game-changers, such as Ronin’s explosive knife. But when I hit the character select screen, my choice of rogue is driven by which gun I’m taking to war.

When it’s time to battle, here are the guns I’m taking with me!

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Review

Does the world need another Puyo Puyo Tetris? Don’t get me wrong, I liked the original game a lot. I have an English version on Nintendo Switch and a Japanese copy on PS4.

The reason I ask is because that first game covered so much ground. Already packed with a ton of modes and a single-player campaign flush with more story than I’d ever want from a puzzle game, it doesn’t feel like there’s much room left for improvement.

Nevertheless, here we are. Does the world really need Puyo Puyo Tetris 2?

Moving to PC as My Fighting Game Platform of Choice?

Playing fighting games on PC wasn’t really an avenue I put much thought into pursuing. Up until recently, I didn’t have PC hardware capable of running video games at all. Even if I did, the PC has played second fiddle to home consoles as the tournament standard ever since the fall of the arcades. Home consoles were easier to set up while providing players with a standardized battleground. Consoles don’t have issues with game performance varying from one PC to the next or having to worry about driver support for every possible controller option. As someone who took fighting games seriously and competed at IRL tournaments, I was going to take the tournament standard every time.

Things are…different now. I haven’t competed in an IRL tournament in a few years. Even if I wanted to, the entire fighting game tournament scene is in flux due to the ongoing pandemic. Also, I finally have a PC capable of running fighting games. If I were to ever give fighting games on PC a chance, it would be right now.

I Completed My First Battle Pass And I Don’t Think I’ll Ever Do This Again

Popularized by Fortnite, the battle pass as a content distribution method in video games has become a staple in gaming. When one purchases a battle pass, they can unlock a series of perks through the course of regular play. However, if you fail to unlock every perk before the allotted time, those perks are gone forever. As such, those who partake in the battle pass grind are heavily incentivized to buy early and play frequently to squeeze every last reward out of their investment.

Though I’ve played games that contained battle passes in the past, the Frigid Haul battle pass within Rogue Company is the first one I’ve ever actively worked towards completing. Do I feel better about my life having gone through the process? No.
