Coming Soon: In Third Person’s 2012 Year in Review

As I tend to do every year, December is year in review month. Throughout the month of December, there will be a bunch of retrospective posts relating to video games and this site, which will ultimately lead to my pick for 2012 game of the year! Last year, Catherine pulled off an epic upset against Skyrim. Will another upset happen again this year? Or will I just choose the latest Capcom fighting game like I usually do?

SPOILERS: Street Fighter X Tekken will not be In Third Person’s 2012 game of the year.

So yes, stay tuned for all of the retrospective posts starting on December 1st!

How I Use Metacritic to Inform My Gaming Purchases

Metacritic as a service is viewed as divisive among gaming enthusiasts. On one hand, it’s the major site that gives you an easy-to-find aggregate of numerous major gaming reviews for one game in one place. On the other hand, critics hate how it marginalizes full reviews into a number, its methods for aggregating reviews, and the significance certain entities place on the final Metacritic score.

My stance on Metacritic is a bit from column A, and a bit from column B, but I do oftentimes refer to Metacritic to inform my gaming purchases. I’m sure everyone has a way of interpreting the data, though I thought I’d share how I use it.

Out Now: The Nintendo Wii U

The biggest day in video game new releases is here! That is, if you pre-ordered or are standing in line right this second.

The Nintendo Wii U and its gigantic touchscreen controller are destined to be essentially sold out between now and Christmas. With that said, there are probably a bunch of you who got one at a midnight launch, or are in line for one this morning. I pre-ordered mine online, so it won’t arrive for the next few days, but I’m cool with that.

If you’ve got it, tell me what you think! If you don’t, do you have any interest in tracking one down while Wii U hype is at an all-time high?

Wreck-It Ralph Micro Review

Saw Wreck-It Ralph when it came out and thought it was great. Beyond the cameos from real video game characters, it’s a movie that lives up to Disney standards. Whether you’re a kid or adult, there’s a lot to enjoy here; especially if you’re a fan of video games. With that said, I think there were opportunities to be even better that it doesn’t capitalize on. I think that it could have handled some of the main conflicts a bit better and pull the heart strings a bit more, but it doesn’t stop the overall experience from being a pleasure. This is one of the safest recommendations I can make to virtually any moviegoer.

NBA Live 13 Gets Canceled

This wasn’t supposed to be NBA Elite all over again. With the extra year off, EA was supposed to return to basketball glory with NBA Live 13. Heck, NBA was even planning on making the offer sweeter by making it a cheaper downloadable game. So much for all of that, as EA just announced that NBA Live 13 has been officially canceled.

Can You Play Borderlands 2 From a Third Person Perspective?

Since the release of Borderlands 2, my site has been slammed with traffic from users searching “Borderlands 2 third person” and all variations of that query. It seems like a lot of you want to know if/how to play Borderlands 2 from this particular camera angle, and coincidentally, my blog is called In Third Person. Though I appreciate all of the extra traffic to my site, I really hope Google isn’t driving people here that will ultimately be disappointed when my posts don’t answer the question. With that in mind, I’ll answer this seemingly burning question:

“Can you play Borderlands 2 from a third person perspective?

If you weren’t completely turned off by our debut effort, we’re back, and notably better! We swear! In all seriousness, thank you to everyone that checked out our first shot at this. As your reward, you’ll get first dibs on what we think is a great step forward in our progression.

In our sophomore effort, we cover the Canadian pilgrimage to White Castle, the unveiling of the iPhone 5, and sweet Mega Man books. We also talk about NHL 13, Double Dragon: Neon, Mark of the Ninja, and delve deep into what it means to be a gamer.

We will probably do at least one more test episode two weeks from now before going ‘live’ for realsies with a dedicated podcast feed, so scoop this episode up before this one disappears into the ether!

Jett, Mat and Jason Present a Currently Unnamed Podcast

For the last two months or so, I’ve been secretly plotting with Jason at Inside Gaming Daily, and Mat at Biff Bam Pop on starting up our own podcast. At last, we can sort of let the cat out of the bag, as our first unofficial episode is ready! We still have a lot of kinks to work out, and apologies for the delivery method, but we’ll set up a proper podcast feed when we’re ready to go live for realsies. For now though, tune in to listen to us chat about the Canadian National Exhibition, Guild Wars 2, Growlanswer: Wayfarer of Time, The Walking Dead Episode 3: The Long Road Ahead, and my hands-on experience with the Wii U!

We hope you enjoy our first kick at the can, and please note that we’re definitely going to polish this show for prime time with a real podcast name, podcast feed, a better means of contacting us, and everything else you’d expect from a proper show. Hit the button below to download!

In Third Person Exclusive Interview with Video Game Production Manager Liza Wood

In general, we as gamers aren’t that familiar with the process of video game creation. It’s easy to assume that there are people writing code, designing graphics, and generating sound, but there’s a lot more to it than that.Liza Wood is a Senior Production Manager in the video game industry. By chance, we struck up an interesting conversation in the comments of my Dreams of Working in the Game-Making Industry post, and thought it’d be worthwhile to formalize this conversation into an interview. Without further ado, here’s my interview with Liza, where we discuss her role as a project manager in video game development.
