Sushi Go Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

The inclusion of Sushi Go onto this list even caught me by surprise. Though the review only recently went live, I’ve had this game for a few months now and have played it a lot. In most cases, the game worked well, though it wasn’t anything that blew me out of the water.

That is, until I broke out it out with my coworkers. Maybe it was just the crowd that I played it with, but the game shined that night in a way that I didn’t think it could. On that night, the sushi moved around the table for hours as my coworkers wouldn’t stop playing it. Whether it hits that super nova level of awesome again remains to be seen. However, even at it’s “worst”, the game is still going to be fun any time you break it out. Congratulations Sushi Go for making the list!

Added XCOM: The Board Game to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

As a huge fan of XCOM and of board games, picking this one up was a no-brainer. But would it be good? After playing it a bunch over the past week or so, I’m happy to say, “Yes!” XCOM: The Board Game does a great job of providing players with an all-around essence of the video game in a format that’s better suited for the tabletop.

Some traditionalists may have grave concerns over the game requiring a digital app to play it, though the app really adds to the experience. You get a great tutorial, variable set-ups and a dynamic turn structure that would be a nightmare to recreate with physical components. The app really takes the game to the next level and wouldn’t be nearly as cohesive without it. Glad to add this one to the list!

Sushi Go and Being a Board Game DJ

The thing that separates great DJs from the pack is their ability to play the music that people want to hear, when they want to hear it. Those DJs can keep a party rocking all night long, while most others will struggle to keep a crowd engaged for an extended period of time. I never chased my DJ dreams with any real vigor, though they ultimately died on the vine when I realized that making a living as one would basically mean that I would have to put the musical tastes of others before my own. Sorry, but your music sucks and I’d rather play Taylor Swift and Wu-Tang all the time. 😛

Ever since I got serious about collecting board games, I’ve unintentionally become the go-to guy that my family and friends look to in order to bring out games that they’d find fun to play. Much like a DJ, it’s become very important for me to gauge the group and pick out the right titles that will work for that group.

Camel Up Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Despite being the winner of the 2014 Speil des Jahres – the most prestigious award in board games – the thought of betting on racing camels didn’t sound all that riveting to me. On a lark, I tried it out with some friends at Snakes and Lattes and it really caught us off guard with how fun it is. Camel Up mixes together a unique take on the roll-and-move mechanic along with different ways of betting on the race that make every race exciting and silly. It does scale well, as the game claims to support from 2-8 players, though I think it works best with 3-5. I’m not qualified enough to say whether Camel Up deserves to be a game of the year champion, but it’s certainly earned a spot on my list of Awesome Board Games You Should Play.

Splendor and Pandemic: The Cure Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Splendor Game

Pandemic: The CureSplendor and Pandemic: The Cure are both awesome games that came out in 2014. The former is an awesome game mechanically with an odd theme bolted onto it, while the other is a great re-imagining of a modern classic. Should you choose to play either, I’m fairly certain that you’ll have a blast. Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

You and an opponent assume the role of rival masterminds in Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men. Based on the Avengers vs. X-Men comic book crossover event, you’ll recruit heroes into your squad before sending them off to battle. Each hero is represented by a card that outlines their special ability, as well as one or more custom dice styled to look like that character. Once you get accustomed to the rules and the different states your dice can be in at any given time, this one is a fun fast-paced dice battling game that you’ll want to play again and again. If the base set isn’t enough, booster packs are sold for only $1 that come with two cards and two dice. This one is another game that’s easy to recommend because it’s fun, cheap (the base game is only $15…if you can find it at retail price) and the collectible factor is through the roof.

Bang!: The Dice Game Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

For 3-8 players, Bang!: The Dice Game puts everyone in the middle of a wild west gunfight. Players take turns firing their guns at others, though they don’t necessarily know if they’re shooting at friend or foe. Pay close attention to who everyone else is shooting at, as it may give you clues into whose on your side. This one is a big hit in our group thanks to its fast and fun gameplay. It’s sub-$20 price point also doesn’t hurt. In terms of bang for your buck (pun intended), Bang!: The Dice Game is pretty tough to beat. Adding this one to the list for me was a no-brainer.

Last Will Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Last WillThe death of your uncle is usually not a reason for celebration. Then again, who are you to mourn when a stipulation in his will says that you need to go broke as fast as you can to earn his fortune? This is the premise behind Last Will, a game where you and three other players live a lavish lifestyle until you’ve gone bankrupt.

Spending all of your money in Last Will is certainly fun, but definitely not easy. During each turn, you must plan your day and run errands before throwing down your inheritance on lavish parties, trips to the gentlemen’s club or mansions. If you incorrectly pace your spending, emptying out your pockets may become very difficult or actually impossible. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this to newcomers or casual board game players, but if you’re in the market for a meatier strategy game with a fun theme, this is one to add to your list.

Lords of Vegas Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Lords of Vegas
The latest addition to the list of Awesome Board Games You Should Play transports players to a patch of desert in 1940s Las Vegas. In Lords of Vegas, it’s up to you and your friends to populate the area with casinos while battling to become the biggest tycoon The Strip has ever seen. This is one of the hardest games that Steff and I have taken on to-date, but the learning curve is certainly worth it. Players are constantly involved in this mad grab for money and property that requires a lot of strategic thinking, though luck certainly plays a big role as well. Backed by a strong theme and highly engaging gameplay that gives you a number of different paths towards success, Lords of Vegas is a shoo-in for this list.

King of Tokyo and Coup Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Both King of Tokyo and Coup share the basic concept of power struggle between them, but they go about them very differently. One involves dice and and the other one makes heavy use of bluffing as a mechanic. Both are a lot of fun and work well at parties. Check out the full list here!
