During the golden age of fighting games, I did most of my virtual pugilism at home. Wiith a Super Nintendo controller in hand, my friends and I spent countless hours playing Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct. For me, my fighting game frenzy reached its peak with Super Street Fighter II on the SNES.

I really appreciate board games that do a great job of marrying their mechanics and theme together into one cohesive experience. Some of my favourite games that deliver on this include Formula D and Legendary: A Marvel Deck-Building Game. The former provides players with a cool sensation of racing through dice, while the latter creates a dramatic battle of good versus evil through the now-ubiquitous deck building mechanic. Originally designed as an officially licensed Street Fighter card game, Yomi aims to do something similar by translating the fighting game experience through cards. Does it deliver on that promise?
Mind over matter is a valid adage in the world of fighting games. Most matches are won by knowledge and good decision-making; not through large combos. Wolverine is my second favourite comic book character of all-time. I’ve always been a fan of his lone wolf mentality, heart-driven decisions, and adamantium claws that he liberally uses to slice foes into confetti. Upon the release of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, I picked him up right away and haven’t looked back. Even if he sucked, I’d probably find a way to make use of him, though he just so happens to be awesome in this series. In a modern world of Zero, Vergil and Dr. Doom players, here’s why I use Logan.
The fighting game genre had been left for dead long before the release of Street Fighter IV. After Super Street Fighter II, I left the genre because the games got too complicated, the competition among players got too fierce, and as a Nintendo-only console owner, the fighting game options completely dried up.
Street Fighter IV did way more than just provide me with a fun blast from the past. It marked the beginning of me falling deeper into a video game rabbit hole than I’d ever fell before.
Outside of the fighting game community, most saw Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as an overpriced DLC pack for the original game. While that argument wouldn’t necessarily be wrong, it was moot in the eyes of the competitive community. Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was a game that was scorching hot at tournaments, but contained a number of flaws that stopped it from living up to its full potential. This game addressed all of those faults, from a shortage of characters, to the dreaded DHC glitch. For someone like me who had played hundreds of hours of the original and still hungry for more? This was excellent.
Injustice: Gods Among Us won me over long before it came out. At Fan Expo 2012, I got to play an early build of the game featuring only Batman and The Flash. Though I didn’t have very long to play it, something about it just felt right. More right than even the Mortal Kombat reboot, which I also really enjoyed.
What I did not anticipate was how far down the Injustice rabbit hole I’d go. Having played virtually every major fighting game released this generation (most of which are good), most of them just fall out of my rotation while I continue to play the same old Street Fighter and Marvel. But once this game hit, I couldn’t put it down.
Trying to play and narrate at the same time has proven problematic, especially for a game as intense as Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, so I switch to recording my vocal track after the fact. I think it makes what I have to say a bit more worthwhile, and you get to see me kick some butt!
This is a short one, but I had to capture the last two on video when I figured them out. While randomly messing around in training mode, I made up a few raw tag combos, which is uncharted territory for me. Check them out!
