Board Game Night Playlist: Family Game Night

Up until this very moment, I never really thought about all of the different meanings that “family game night” can entail. There’s a difference between parents playing board games with their young children versus adults playing board games with their even older parents, which is where I’m at now. The definition can vary even further, as there are a seemingly endless number of family configurations out there.

Trying to approach a family game night to fit every family configuration is a lost cause. However, coming up with one is a bit easier if you’re looking for games that are fun for all ages that don’t have any sort of objectionable content within them. Hopefully this isn’t too late for the holiday season. Here’s my Board Game Night Playlist that may work wonders for your next family game night!

The first in the Forbidden series of board games makes its way to the iPad courtesy of Button Mash Games and Gamewright. In it, you and your team of adventurers are trying to gather four mystical treasures while the island you’re standing on is sinking. Can you make it off of the island with the goods before everything is submerged by the ocean?

Forbidden Island Review

In Forbidden Island, you and your team of adventures set forth on this island in search of mystical treasure. The problem is, the island decides to sink whenever punks like you try and make off with the goods. The game starts with you and your group scattered across this place that is already flooded in spots. Your goal is to collect all four treasures and return to the helicopter pad before one many calamities permanently halts your progress.

Just in case you were wondering, yes, this is the precursor of Forbidden Desert, which I’ve previously reviewed. That game was one that made a lukewarm first impression but when it clicked, it really wowed us with how exciting of an adventure it turned out to be. Due to my enjoyment of that game, I decided to take a stab at the game that spawned the franchise.

Forbidden Desert Review

Forbidden DesertPandemic made a fantastic first impression on me. Since that fateful first try, the game has become a favourite on board game night while inspiring me to look for more games of that flavour. After weeks of research, I picked up Forbidden Desert. Some may know it as the direct sequel to Forbidden Island, but the immediate connection is the fact that this is the latest game from the designer of Pandemic. While this is another co-operative adventure, does it do enough to step outside of its spiritual successor’s shadow?
