My Favourite First-Person Shooters

Pioneered by the likes of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, the first-person shooter has grown to become one of the most popular genres in gaming. There’s something inherently visceral about viewing the world from the eyes of your character, as it puts you a step closer to the action.

Though I wouldn’t consider myself to be a genre enthusiast, I have played a number of first-person shooters in my travels. Here’s a quick list of a few faves! What are some of your fave first-person shooters?

Turtle Rock Studios and Warner Bros. have announced that they’re teaming up to create the zombie horde shooter Back 4 Blood. With Turtle Rock being the original team behind Left 4 Dead, this is the right team for a spiritual successor to a fan favourite.

Top 10 Games of This Generation – Honourable Mention: Left 4 Dead

Unlike many a gamer, who had no shortage of fond memories with Valve games, their catalogue of work was alien to me until Left 4 Dead. As an active avoider of PC gaming, I missed out on Half Life and Team Fortress completely, while being years late to Portal. Thankfully, I was there on day one for Left 4 Dead.

On a whim before the game’s release, I downloaded the demo on Xbox Live. I was not ready for the awesomeness that would ensue.

Rapture Special: Pro-Tips from Video Games on How to Survive the May 21, 2011 Apocalypse


If you’re reading this, then the supposed Rapture scheduled for May 21, 2011, has not ended the world as we know it. That, or it’s happening as you read this and you really should be doing something other than reading this post, like trying to live or accepting your fate.

The apocalypse has been subject matter in video games for about as long as video games has existed as a medium. I bet you can’t count the number of times you’ve saved the world, tried to save the world, or tried to survive in a world that has already been ravaged by the apocalypse. Let’s take a look at some of those games and see if these games can prepare us for the real-life Rapture…if it isn’t already too late.
