Pick-Up Post: Infinity Blade

Infinity Blade (iTunes)

Infinity Blade has created quite the buzz for itself. Up until I read reviews about the game, I had absolutely no idea what it was about. However, I’ve known about it ever since it was debuted a few months ago. Up until now, I’ve known Infinity Blade as the graphically-stunning iOS game.

Developed by Chair, Infinity Blade is the first iOS game developed on Unreal Engine. The name may not ring a bell if you don’t follow that sort of thing, but odds are you have played an Unreal Engine 3 game within the last five years. That engine has enabled games like Gears of War to look stunning, and it appears as though Chair has the Unreal Engine doing magical things on iOS. Based on what I’ve seen in screen shots and video, it looks leaps and bounds beyond anything else on the platform.

But what about the gameplay? I don’t actually know for myself, because I’m in the process of installing it on my iPad right now. The few reviews I’ve read say that it’good. It sounds like it’s a mix of Punch-Out with RPG elements. To be honest though, that’s not the driving motivation behind this purchase. Call me a graphics whore, but I’m buying this first to experience the graphics, then to be knowledgeable about a major iOS release, then to experience the gameplay. At $6, I think I can splurge this one time based on those driving forces.

Hopefully this game is as awesome to play as it is to look at. Once I give it a go, I’ll certainly post my impressions of it on In Third Person.
