Thoughts on Star Wars #1 (2015)

Shooting out of the gates with a first issue that sold almost a million copies, the return of Star Wars to Marvel was easily one of the biggest comic events of the year. Though I may be a lifelong fan of the original trilogy, this event would pass me by without a bat of an eyelid. In general, I don’t have an appetite for extended universe content. Sure, I played the heck out of Shadows of the Empire on the Nintendo 64, and there’s actually a copy of the Star Wars: Imperial Assault board game waiting to be played on my shelf, but most of what’s out there isn’t appealing at all to me.

If it weren’t for all of the positive buzz this new series has gotten of late, it would have continued to race through the galaxy without me. Crossing paths with issue #1 at Niagara Comic Con, I decided to spend a few bucks to see what the hubbub was about. To my surprise, it was the most fun I’ve had reading a single issue in quite some time.

Thoughts on the Big All-New, All Different Marvel Reveal: X-Men Edition

Thanks to a leak of the latest Marvel Preview, we got an advanced look of 45 new Marvel Comics titles that will launch as part of All-New, All Different Marvel. This will take place after the Secret Wars crossover event completes in the summer. Lots to say, so we’ll break it out into different franchises. First up, X-Men!

Secret Wars

The Marvel universe as we once knew it is no more! An event years in the making and one that culminates in the Secret Wars crossover event, Marvel Comics has destroyed what’s left of its multiverse by smashing the last two planets together. All that’s left is Battleworld, a patchwork of lands from different points in Marvel history. I generally avoid crossover events like the plague, but the promise of total annihilation was too hard to ignore. So far, I’m glad to to be in!

Niagara Falls Comic Con 2015 Recap

Niagara Falls Comic ConTaking place just north of the border was Niagara Falls Comic Con. While Steff and I are no strangers to the Falls, it was our first time heading down there for the convention. Arriving just before opening on Saturday, thousands were lined up around the building, anxious to get in. Though we in Toronto are spoiled with a number of conventions of our own, I was really glad to have gone out of town for this one.

Uncanny X-Men #600 delayed from May until after Secret Wars and what it could mean

Fans looking to close the book on the Marvel Now edition of the X-Men are going to have to wait a while. Brian Michael Bendis, the writer of Uncanny X-Men and All New X-Men confirmed on his Tumblr page that Uncanny X-Men #600 has been delayed from May to October 2015 for “editorial and commercial reasons”. Besides the obvious time difference, there are other, more scummy reasons why this delay sucks.

Time for Spider-Gwen and Silk to Shine

Around this time last year, comic fans were anxiously awaiting the triumphant return of Peter Parker as Spider-Man. He’s been on a hiatus of sorts, as Doctor Octopus had taken control of his body for a few years thanks to a heinous mind swap. With Peter back in control, we wondered how he’d cope with all of the changes that Doc Ock made to his life.

Roughly one year and one potentially-cataclysmic Spider-Verse run later, Peter Parker is once again pushed out of the spotlight. This time, it’s by Spider-Gwen and Silk; two new characters introduced during Peter’s return.

Comic Content Hiatus

Just over a year ago, I discovered the wonderful medium of comic books and made them a part of my everyday life. During this discovery phase, I wrote about comics a lot. I even dabbled a little bit into video content with the In Third Person Comic Book Show. The comic situation today is a bit different. I still read, though it’s been months since I’ve posted about them in earnest. What gives?

My 2014 Holiday Wishlist

I’ve been told on many occasions that I’m horrible to shop for. Ever since I joined the workforce, I would go out of my way to purchase everything I ever wanted as soon as humanly possible. It’s part of the reason why I’ve been able to generate so much content for this site over the years.

This year’s a bit different. While I am not broke or unemployed, my financial situation is such that I can no longer maintain that lifestyle. As such, my wish list is a country mile long. I won’t share the whole thing in this post, but here are a few choice items from my wish list this year!
