Riding a wave of critical acclaim and positive word-of-mouth, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is shattering franchise sales records all over the world. Becoming the best-selling game in the series is an inevitability at this point. But does that make it the best?
It might be when it’s all said and done. However, I’m reluctant to give it the crown just yet. As much as I love it, here are some factors that could prevent it from being the undisputed best in the series.

A few weeks after the release of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, it’s still the one big thing the Boss Rush crew still wants to talk about! We go in-depth on our thoughts of this hit strategy game, covering everything from its updated battle system, to its heavy emphasis on relationship building, to our strategies for wooing waifus and husbandos!
We also touch on some other games we’ve been playing, including Cat Quest, Pillars of Eternity, and WWF No Mercy. Finally, we end the show with a wish.com related game! The most obvious change that Fire Emblem: Three Houses has brought to the series is the more involved way in which you manage your life off of the battlefield. Instead of restocking your items and triggering support conversations from menus, you’re character is controlled in a fully-rendered hub-world. This system gives everything a much stronger sense of place, while the additional activities you have give you a means of making even deeper connections with the cast. I had so much written on this topic that it ended up forming the basis for my review.
That doesn’t mean the combat has been left alone. Under the hood, there are some sizable changes that make it differ from other Fire Emblem games in recent years. Not sure whether the changes came about because of the story, or the story changed to reflect the mechanical differences. Nevertheless, I thought it would be cool to highlight how they feed off each other to create a unique battle experience.
Catherine arrives on the scene with her ridiculous hero relic sword! After cutting down the bandits, we investigate a potential assassination threat on Rhea, and I get my first opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea with someone! Along the way, we try our best to have a spoiler-free conversation about our thoughts on Fire Emblem: Three Houses now that I’ve finished my non-streaming file!

There’s two sides to every story. The Fire Emblem: Fates series of games attempted to tell both in its conflict between two armies. Getting the opportunity to bond with each and see the events from different perspectives was an interesting twist to the formula, but you had to buy the Birthright and Conquest campaigns separately. After you’ve finished both? Surprise! You actually have to buy and play the DLC to see what really happened! Both games and the DLC were great, but it certainly felt like a cash grab.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses could have scored a victory by simply taking that multi-sided campaign and stuffing it into one package. Instead, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems went above and beyond with this gargantuan game.
