An Ode to Rock Band

On one hand, the news of Harmonix’s last round of Rock Band DLC hitting today shouldn’t have stung me as much as it did. I haven’t picked up a plastic instrument in years and had no plans of going back. However, this franchise has left an undeniable mark on my life since its 2007 debut and it’s sad to see the curtains finally close on an old friend.

Off-Topic – Adventures in Apartment Hunting 2013 Edition Part 7: The Decision

After a good night’s sleep, Steff and I were still feeling hot on the place we saw the night before. That morning, we reached out to our real estate agent to lock things down for us. However, I got a call from Steff shortly after with some bad news.

Off-Topic – Adventures in Apartment Hunting 2013 Edition Part 6: The Also Ran

The suite on the 2st floor would be a hard act to follow. Steff and I were gushing about it on the elevator ride down to the 16th floor, where our final stop of the night was. Before going into it, this one was sort of doomed, due to it being on a lower floor and more expensive. However, the building has already made a great first impression and who knows what we’ll find behind this next door.

Off-Topic – Adventures in Apartment Hunting 2013 Edition Part 5: Sky is the Limit

As creeped out as I was from being at the Sketchy Time Donuts condo, I drove away from that thinking it was a positive experience. It was the first time I really got to spend time in a loft-style condo, and it opened my eyes to that style of home. No time to dwell on that though, as we had two more places to see tonight in the same building: one on the 21st floor and one on the 16th.

Nerds vs. Jocks at Fan Expo 2013

For many years, Fan Expo has been the definitive Canadian nerd experience. Recently, Hobby Star Marketing announced that the event would now also encompass sports. As a life-long fan of sports, I’m pumped to get to celebrate both at the same time. However, the reaction among the Fan Expo faithful doesn’t appear to be as enthusiastic.

Off-Topic – Adventures in Apartment Hunting 2013 Edition Part 4: Sketchy Time Donuts

Our last adventure was a heartbreaker. Though we felt down, we were far from out. Apartment #4 was the first of 3 we would see that night. Forgoing the triplex format this time around, we found a loft-style condo that looked like one you’d get from living in the heart of the city. Was the metropolitan experience enough to win us over?

Off-Topic – Adventures in Apartment Hunting 2013 Edition Part 3: The Lake House

Based on our learning from our last adventure, we opened up our search to include triplex-style buildings. It didn’t take long for us to find one by Lake Ontario that had a lot of potential. Did we finally find ‘the one’?

Girlfriend Gaming – Wonderbook: Book of Spells

Steff is the biggest Harry Potter fan I know. She’s read all the books. She owns all of the movies. She’s brought me to platform 9 3/4 in England. She can even claim that the actor that plays Draco Malfoy was totally checking her out when they met for a photo-op a few years back at Fan Expo. I’m still a bit bitter about that last part, but I digress.

When we saw Wonderbook: Book of Spells at Sony’s E3 2012 press conference, she made it clear to me that this was something she needed to play someday. Having been a good girl this year, she received it from Santa for Christmas. Though I didn’t play much of it myself, I did watch her play a bunch of it. Was it as magical of an experience as its source material would imply?

Off-Topic – Adventures in Apartment Hunting 2013 Edition Part 2: The Triplex

Our first foray into apartment hunting in 2013 was not a bad first outing. We did get to see a quality place and learned that this particular area was not our cup of tea. We went back to the hunt and found an interesting place in a format neither of us had any real experience with: the triplex.

Off-Topic – Adventures in Apartment Hunting 2013 Edition Part 1: Home in a Hopeless Place

Moving sucks. This is a conclusion I came to last year when Steff and I decided to get our own place. While the process in the grand scheme of things went relatively smoothly and we didn’t really have all that much stuff to bring over, the process of finding a place and then bringing all of your stuff to it was one I really didn’t want to do again anytime soon.

Yet a year later, here we are, back on the hunt. Our first home together has been good for us, but we ultimately deemed that this wasn’t the right place for us in the medium to long term. This time, with a seemingly much better understanding of what we wanted out of a home, we scoured the market for a new place. This is part 1 of our latest adventure.
