Check Out My Review of Indie Game: The Movie on Splitkick.com

Not too long ago, I got a chance to see an advanced screening of Indie Game: The Movie as part of the Hot Docs film festival. It was a very cool event that included a special Q&A with the creators of the film and Phil Fish. If you have any interest in checking out this movie, head over to Splitkick.com to check out my review!

A Correlation Between Cooking and Video Games

For the past few months I’ve been making an honest effort to learn how to cook. Though my first few efforts were mediocre at best, I’ve definitely stepped up my game. Though I am far from an Iron Chef, it feels liberating to know that I’m in a place now where I can actually cook real food. One day, I hope that I’m good enough as a chef that I can make a decent meal on the fly with whatever ingredients and cooking tools I have at my disposal.

Though cooking can be a time-intensive process, that hasn’t bogged down my enjoyment of the process, which I enjoy quite a bit. Why? Oddly, I’ve been able to draw a connection between my enjoyment of cooking and enjoyment of video games.

Trials Evolution and Video Game Masochism

If you were to watch me play Trials Evolution, the last thing you would expect me to be having is fun. Oftentimes, I appear with a look of defeat; cursing at my TV as I screw up the same jump for the 30th time in a row. Over the course of a few weeks, I must have hit restart thousands of times, hoping that success was just around the corner. If I did not love this game so much, I would not put myself through the type of physical and psychological punishment that Trials Evolution puts me through. Despite the amount of fun I’m having (especially when I succeed after dozens of failures), most people would probably view this behaviour as masochistic.

It’s not very often that I’ll put myself through this type of suffering as part of the enjoyment of a game, but it happens if it’s the right game at the right time. Are there any games you’ve played that hurt so good? Let’s discuss in the comments!

One more thing of note. Trials Evolution review coming soon!

Throwing Down on SRK Live

Ever since Shoryuken.com started running a 24/7 fighting game live stream, it’s been a goal of mine to dominate on the stream at least once. In the past, I’ve won a handful of games at best, and choked really bad at worst. The other day, however, I dished out some punishment. Playing Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Version 2012, I rattled off a 10-game winning streak to take my record to 10-0. Yes, that is me in the picture, capturing photographic evidence of this feat.

3 Game Projects That Deserve a Kickstarter Campaign

Say what you will about Tim Shaefer’s legendary game industry career, his most recent accomplishment of utilizing Kickstarter as a means of funding the creation of a video game could very well be his most profound in hindsight. Since he raised millions of dollars towards his point-and-click adventure game, it’s opened the door for countless other game creators to follow suit. Odds are, this Kickstarter revolution will be directly responsible for the creation of a number of games that never would have been possible without crowdsourcing for funds.

Having put some thought into this, I’ve put together a list of 5 gaming projects that deserve a Kickstarter campaign. I would love to see these come to life, and I’d probably throw in a few bucks if someone was going to give these an honest try. I’d love to hear from you what game projects you’d love to see get a Kickstarter campaign so you can help make them happen too! Drop a line in the comments!

In Third Person’s 10 Steps to Video Game Blogging Success

Welcome to the wonderful world of video game blogging. Though there are millions of video game blogs out there and millions more to come, there’s always room for you to join the party. I don’t have any stats to back this up, but I’m fairly certain that most blogs live a relatively short life, garnering at best a handful of visits a day until the blog owner gets bored of writing. If you have no long-term aspirations for your blog, then leaving it to die after a few weeks or months is fine. With that said, if you have visions of your blog being the next Kotaku, or using your blog as a stepping-stone to work at a blog like Kotaku, you probably don’t want to run the blog that has no readers and stays that way until you eventually abandon it.

In Third Person is not on the level of a Kotaku, Joystiq or Destructoid, but I’ve been able to achieve a certain level of success in the few years I’ve been doing this. To celebrate reaching 100,000 visits, I thought I’d share In Third Person’s secrets to success with you.

Jett is Teaming Up With Splitkick.com!

Hey everyone,

I’m pleased to announce that I will be joining the good folks at Splitkick as a contributing writer. If you’re unfamiliar with the site, it’s a very cool gaming website with a focus on opinion-based articles and reviews. We’re both working towards the same vision, which factored into my decision to join the team. It also doesn’t hurt that they’re a group of genuinely good people who are all working together to make each other better as writers and gaming enthusiasts. As someone who has always worked as a one-man show, I’m really thankful for the opportunity to positively contribute to the Splitkick team of gaming journalists.

Going forward, you’ll see some of my articles and reviews appear on Splitkick. The first of my contributions is a review for Bloodforge on XBOX Live Arcade, which you can check out right now. You may also hear me on a Splitkick podcast or two at some point in the future.

Will this impact my duties on In Third Person? Nope. Rest assured that this site will continue to operate as it always has, if not better.

Before I go, just wanted to say thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy all of the future working coming out of Splitkick and In Third Person!
– Jett

Off-Topic – Misadventures of a Newbie Chef Day 2

After completing my day 1 meal, I texted a picture of it to my mom and told her how it turned out. She laughed at my results and responded back with one of her signature dishes for me to try out. With Steff gone for the night to watch the midnight premiere screening of the Hunger Games, I was once again on my own for dinner. Did I have what it took to make her chicken with mushroom cream sauce?
