Throwing Down on SRK Live

Ever since Shoryuken.com started running a 24/7 fighting game live stream, it’s been a goal of mine to dominate on the stream at least once. In the past, I’ve won a handful of games at best, and choked really bad at worst. The other day, however, I dished out some punishment. Playing Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Version 2012, I rattled off a 10-game winning streak to take my record to 10-0. Yes, that is me in the picture, capturing photographic evidence of this feat.

Four Top Fighting Game Players Move In Together to Start Fighting Game TV

In the world of StarCraft, the concept of the player house is not new. Some of the most serious competitors in that world will move in together, train together and broadcast everything in between. In an interesting development, Shady K, Filipino Champ, Ricky Ortiz and PR Balrog, all of whom are recognized as some of the best fighting game players on the planet, have decided to follow suit. They’ve moved into their new place and are live streaming themselves playing games and their everyday lives in the house on FgtvLive.

Canada Cup 2011 Fighting Game Tournament Starts Today!

Starting today, the Canada Cup 2011 fighting game tournament takes place in Calgary, Alberta. For you Calgary-based In Third Person readers who will be attending this event, or out-of-towners traveling in for this, I hope you have a blast. For us stream monsters, you can watch the stream for free here, or for $8.99, watch the stream ad-free in HD.

What makes this particular major fighting game tournament stand out from the rest is the inclusion of an international 5-on-5 team tournament, featuring 8 teams filled with top players from around the world. Credit where credit is due, it was my girlfriend Steff who first told me about the 5-on-5. With that tidbit of info, I would shortly forget it, find out about it again in the news, then tell Steff about the 5-on-5 as if she didn’t already tell me this. Whoops. In spite of my blunder, Steff is genuinely interested in watching the 5-on-5 tournament with me, which is super cool.

Movember 2012 Special: More of Gaming’s Best Moustaches

On a whim last year, I decided to write a mildly humourous post about video game moustaches to help promote Movember, a movement in which men grow out their facial hair to raise awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer. To my surprise, it ended up being the second most visited post of all-time on In Third Person. I have no way of measuring this, but I hope that the original post somehow made a positive impact on Movember.

Thanks to the success of the original, I thought it wouldn’t hurt to revisit the subject. There are a ton of gaming moustaches worth talking about, so why not? If you’d like to partake or donate to Movember, check out the website for more information.

The Possibility of Working in Gaming Journalism

There was a time in my early teens when I thought that being a gaming journalist would be the coolest job in the world. How could a job that requires you to play the latest and greatest video games before they come out not be the coolest job ever? During my younger years of reading the golden age of EGM and Gamepro, I had dreams of being the next Scary Larry or Sushi-X.

In my own way, I’m closer to living that dream than ever. In Third Person is my venue to share my gaming-related writing to the world, which now receives thousands of visits a month. As this site has grown, I’ve seen a number of job postings for writers at some of my favourite gaming websites and blogs. Do I have what it takes to make that jump into gaming journalism? Or more importantly, do I even want to make that jump into gaming journalism?

Universal Fighting Game Guide: 11 Tips To Help You Survive a Fighting Game Tournament

When it comes to fighting games, there’s nothing more exciting, intense or as important as the fighting game tournament. This is the place where fighting game players who take their games seriously strut their stuff in hopes of winning the big prize, and more importantly, earning the respect of their fellow fighting game playing peers. You can say what you want about how you scrape your friends all the time at your place, or how you’re a legend at your local arcade, or how you’re one of the top ranked players online, but in the new era of fighting games, it’s all about showing and proving at a tournament, especially one that’s being live streamed for viewers around the world to check out.

Though I’m far from a seasoned tournament veteran, I’m still very much feeling the buzz from my time at T12: Toronto Fighting Game Championships, which is the inspiration for today’s post. I think I’ve had enough tournament experience (and have heard enough second-hand accounts) to give you a few words of wisdom if you plan on going to a tournament, especially if this will be your first one.

In Third Person’s Style Guide to Video Game Shirts

I am a fairly outward person when it comes to my love of video games. Besides writing a blog about them, I oftentimes bring up gaming in day-to-day conversation with anyone willing to listen; video game fan or otherwise. I also like to wear video game shirts. Once upon a time, the thought of outwardly showing my nerdiness through a gaming t-shirt horrified me. Over the years though, as gaming has become more socially acceptable and I’ve become more comfortable in my own skin, I’ve taken to purchasing and wearing video game shirts in public with pride.

As much as I enjoy gaming shirts, I have extremely specific taste. There are shirts that I will pay stupid amounts to have while there are many other shirts that I feel personally offended by just by looking at them. When I wear a gaming shirt, I want to convey a very specific message to certain people, which many shirts don’t do. I’m no fashionista when it comes to…well, anything, but I thought I’d share my perspective on gaming shirts anyway. Maybe you’ll agree with my gaming fashion do’s and don’ts, maybe you won’t. In any case, I’d love to hear your gaming fashion tips in the comments.

About You: My Understanding of the In Third Person Readership Based on the Numbers

I love analytics. As someone who works in the online advertising industry, I find the process of analyzing numbers and deriving insights from those numbers to be very interesting. Although WordPress.com has a very limited analytics dashboard, I still check the numbers multiple times a day to see how everything is doing.

For the fun of it, I thought I’d write a mini-report of sorts to share with you some of the insights I’ve gathered about you and those who frequent this site. I sort of did this about a year ago, but I thought it’d be fun to try and make a persona model of you, the In Third Person reader. I understand that you’re all unique people, but the purpose of this exercise is to try and boil you down into one main archetype based on the numbers I have available to me. How does this match up to you?
