Next Gen Busts

Last summer, my excitement for the start of next gen with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was at a fever pitch. It had been a long time since we’d made a technological leap and was anxiously looking forward to what the future would hold for gaming with these new machines. A year later, and both of them are basically just collecting dust on my shelf.

Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

You and an opponent assume the role of rival masterminds inĀ Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men. Based on the Avengers vs. X-Men comic book crossover event, you’ll recruit heroes into your squad before sending them off to battle. Each hero is represented by a card that outlines their special ability, as well as one or more custom dice styled to look like that character. Once you get accustomed to the rules and the different states your dice can be in at any given time, this one is a fun fast-paced dice battling game that you’ll want to play again and again. If the base set isn’t enough, booster packs are sold for only $1 that come with two cards and two dice. This one is another game that’s easy to recommend because it’s fun, cheap (the base game is only $15…if you can find it at retail price) and the collectible factor is through the roof.

jettFTW vs. NostalgicX in Ultra Street Fighter IV

This match is a great example of how important space control is. Sakura wants to rush in as aggressively as possible while Rolento wants to keep her at bay with his pokes. When one person controls the space, they dominate. However, the action swings wildly as control switches hands.

So this is the #1 ranked Rolento on PSN?

One round ranked match against an opponent going out of his way to get hit by the same move over and over? Well, congratulations I guess.

Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men Review

The 2012 comic book battle between Avengers and X-Men rages on in Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men. In this two-player collectible dice and card game, players act as masterminds, recruiting an assortment of Marvel’s finest characters to fight on their side. The player who is able to deplete all of their opponent’s health wins.

With the starter set only costing $15 (if you can find it at retail price, as the game is currently in short supply) and booster packs coming in at a measly $1 for two cards and two dice, this game is aggressively priced to sell. While price alone makes this a tantalizing offer, it’s also aided by the fact that the game is pretty good.

In Third Person Comic Book Show: Fan Expo Canada 2014

I let loose about the biggest pop culture event in Canada, which takes place from August 28-31! I apologize for the few technical hiccups in the show. I’ll see what I can do to prevent that going forward!

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition) Review

I’ve never read any of George R. R. Martin’s books and I’ve only watched the first three episodes of the hit television show based on his work, but I’m always up for playing a great board game. Originally released in 2003, the critically-acclaimed A Game of Thrones board game was brought back to life with an updated second edition. I can’t speak to the differences, as I never played the original, though you can find some helpful notes on the matter over at Board Game Geek. Even though I currently don’t have any affinity for the source material, I love this game.

In Third Person Comic Book Show: Spider-Man Stories That Give You the Feels

Some of my favourite Spider-Man stories go well beyond the simple conflict between good and evil. Here are a few classics that do just that!

Tokaido and Board Game Scarcity

A few months ago, Steff and I went on a date to Snakes and Lattes, which is Toronto’s premier board game cafe. On that day, a game called Tokaido made a positive impact on us. In it, players trek hike through Japan, making stops along the way to take in the scenery, relax in hot springs, meet cool people and more. The player who has had the most fulfilling trip wins. The game’s charm and interesting strategy mechanics won us over, but we weren’t quite ready to purchase it that day. Months later, we’re ready to buy, but the game has been sold out of at most stores and online retailers ever since. My only options to purchase the game through international retailers and eat the extra shipping costs, or purchase the game at a premium price through a third party seller. I’ve actually seen the game for sale at over double it’s suggested retail price!
