Fighting Game Knowledge And Paying It Forward

One of the people I admire the most in the fighting game community is Ryan Gutierrez. Best known as Gootecks, he’s recognized as being a top Street Fighter III: Third Strike player, as well as a top Street Fighter IV player in the game’s early days. While he could have continued to pursue that path, he made a conscious decision to be a content creator with an eye on tutorials and advice for newcomers. Part of that decision probably was because he saw it as a more stable means of making an income from being a part of the FGC. However, he also recognized the importance of growing the community, which he’s most vocal about in the early days of his podcast. Without bringing new players into the scene, the FGC would have continued down the path of being a tiny niche market that was stuck playing the same old games for a decade. Without guys like Gootecks paying it foward, I may have missed out on some of the best and most rewarding times I’ve ever had playing video games.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and the Execution Barrier

Though I don’t talk about it much on this blog, I am no slouch in the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 series. Having invested hundreds of hours into it, I wreak havoc online and it’s generally the game I do best at in tournaments. Say what I will about having the #1 ranked Rose in Canada on Xbox Live and PlayStation Networkmy best tournament placing to-date across any game is 25th in MvC 3 at T12; a point that arguably holds more weight in my fighting game resume.

Having said that, I have a glaring hole in my skill-set that keeps me from ascending to the upper echelon of players: my inability to land the biggest combos.

How To Beat Deathstroke In Injustice: Gods Among Us

“Aw crap. Another Deathstroke player.”

This assassin-for-hire immediately became public enemy #1 upon the release of Injustice: Gods Among Us. Players of all sorts are crying foul over his seemingly cheap tactics. Scratching The Surface of Catwoman in Injustice: Gods Among Us

A few nights ago, I was playing a few games of Injustice: Gods Among Us with Aaron from Splitkick and Jeff, who is a Splitkick community member. Inspired by Jeff’s use of Catwoman that night, I decided to give the character a go. I really love her rushdown style, though I find her execution requirements to be pretty high.

This video isn’t meant to be a definitive list of the best or flashiest Catwoman combos, though they are a few that I came up with that graze some of the more advanced aspects of creating combos with her. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Jett vs. Niysx in Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Version 2012

Jett Vs. is back! Sort of. Last time I ran this series of posts, they were universally ignored by readers for any number of reasons. Because the readers weren’t there and these posts take a lot of work to create, I decided to stop running the series. However, over the past few months of leveling up and working towards world domination, I’ve compiled what I think are some pretty good match videos worth sharing.

In this post, my Cammy faces off against Niysx’s M. Bison.

How-To Beat Sentinel in Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Sentinel is arguably the most divisive character in the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 roster. Though he’s wildly popular nowadays, many people consider him to be extremely overpowered. As a Sentinel player myself, I love the fact that he his damage output is insane for the amount of work you have to do (which is not much).

However, Sentinel is not perfect. Though you can’t deny his damage output, he also has holes in his game, which many players are starting to find every day. I actually get excited when I play against a Sentinel player, because in most cases, I can exploit Sentinel’s weaknesses with my own team. It also doesn’t hurt that the majority of Sentinel players I run into have no idea how to use him to his full potential, simply because they’re Sentinel bandwagon jumpers. I’m no pro at Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but here are some words of wisdom for how to beat the machine based on my own experience and information I’ve learned elsewhere.
