Paladins Impressions

Pioneered by Team Fortress 2 and popularized in the mainstream by Overwatch, the hero shooter is gaining momentum as a force in the gaming space. Unlike modern fare such as Call of Duty or Battlefield, these games place a heavy emphasis on teamwork, as specialized characters with pre-baked looks and personality are designed with distinct strengths and weaknesses. If you work as a team, you’re able to bring out the best in each member while hiding each other’s deficiencies. On top of that, games like Team Fortress and Overwatch have succeeded in making characters that people care about, even if they do little more than kill for sport within the context of their respective games.

Paladins is the latest game in the genre, available now on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch. Using Overwatch in particular as its foundation, it adds a MOBA-inspired upgrading mechanic that allows players to improve their character to their liking over the course of the match. On top of that, this one is free-to-play. Does this squad of medieval heroes have what it takes to give the futuristic frontrunners of Overwatch a run for their money?

Some Love for My Favourite Pocket Rumble Character June!

Pocket Rumble‘s greatest asset is that it has excellent character designs from a visual and gameplay perspective. Even without any sort of lore within or outside of the game, these characters ooze with personality while giving players a ton of unique tools to battle with. Though the roster is small, there’s seemingly something for everyone here.

When I first started playing the game, I gravitated towards Tenchi, as he was essentially a Ryu clone with familiar tools that I could quickly grasp. However, once I set eyes on June, I knew this was the character I had to play as. Not long after, I climbed my way all the way up to #2 on the June-specific leaderboards and having a blast doing it!

NBA 2K18 on Switch Impressions

I checked out of the NBA 2K experience a few years ago. Though I was madly in love with it at one point, the lack of meaningful upgrades from year-to-year caused it to fall out of my rotation. Ever since then, I’ve also heard that the game’s microtransactions have gotten so brazen that they drastically hurt the overall experience.

None of that mattered when I recently bought the Canadian edition of NBA 2K18 with Demar Derozan on the cover. Still devastated by my all-time favourite Raptor being traded away, I picked up the Switch version with his box art as a keepsake to that time of #wethenorth prosperity. Since I now own this game, the most curious version of it no less, I put this one through its paces to see what we’d find.
