Universal Fighting Game Guide: Character Variety is the Spice of Life

Becoming a master of every single character in any fighting game is really hard. Now that games have dozens of characters with nearly as many play styles and a countless number of moves to understand, reaching a peak level of effectiveness with everyone is prohibitively time-intensive for almost anyone. With only so much time one can spend on any given fighting game, most people lean heavily towards one main character and possibly a back-up.
I fully endorse the approach of learning every nook and cranny of one character. You don’t have to look very far for examples of people who have taken this approach, such as Smug of Dudley fame in the Street Fighter IV series. However, that doesn’t mean that any time you play with a character other than your main is a waste.
In this edition of the Universal Fighting Game Guide, we cover the virtues of character variety. No one will ever expect you to master every single character in a game, but so much can be learned by exploring the grass on the other side. Here’s how character variety can make you a better fighting game player.
Ultra Street Fighter IV jettFTW (Rose) vs. Smug (Dudley)
Widely recognized as the best Dudley player in the world and one of the best overall in Ultra Street Fighter IV, I have my hands full against Smug. Clearly I’m in over my head in this set of four matches, but do I have enough to not completely get embarrassed?
Killer Instinct: In the Lab with Rash
Watch me go through the discovery process with the latest character in Killer Instinct. It’s also an opportunity to see how I learn a new character in a fighting game, which may give you a new perspective on the learning process. Check it out!

The Future of Characters and Balance Updates in Street Fighter V

As part of a Street Fighter V panel at Evolution, Capcom revealed some interesting tidbits about the base roster, post-launch release of characters, as well as some info on balance patches. We now know that the game will launch with 16 characters, 4 of which are brand new. The first of those 4 new characters, Necalli, was revealed at Evo later that weekend. More characters will be gradually released over time, all of which can be earned for free by playing the game, or paid for with real money. Finally, all balance updates will be free and rolled out to everyone.
Universal Fighting Game Guide: Option Selects

Have you ever fought someone that seemed like they were psychic? Someone that seemed to have a counter for your next move the instant you did it? Some players may just have a read on you. Others might have been really good guessers. Or, in very specific circumstances, they may have leveraged an option select to improve their odds of success. In this edition of the Universal Fighting Game Guide, we talk about the concept of option selects. This is probably the most advanced concept in all of fighting games, though I’ll try my best to break it down and simplify things. Continue reading
So How About That Street Fighter V Beta?

I saw that a few people got into training mode and one person actually got in a few matches, but it’s been a complete disaster so far. Most of my night was spent staring at a black screen. Infrequently I would get to the title screen, only for the game to say it was disconnected from the server and reverting back to the black screen.
This is an ongoing situation that I’m sure Capcom is frantically trying to fix. Thankfully, they’ve also announced that the beta will be extended to make up for lost time. For now though, I’m bitter that I bailed out on a party only to waste my time with this broken mess of a beta. Fingers crossed for us all that this is resolved soon!
Out Today: Street Fighter V Beta
The wait to dive into this Street Fighter V beta is almost over! Scheduled to open at 9PM EST today, I will be all over it. Besides taking it in for myself, I’ll try my best to capture video and impressions. Maybe even a combo video or two if the game allows for it?
If you’re interested in getting in the beta, I don’t think it’s too late. At the very least, you can pre-order the game through PSN and immediately download the beta client. Let the new era of butt-kicking begin!
