I’ve been on the losing end of an ongoing battle with weight loss for quite a while. Most recently, my efforts last spring were completely stifled by a foot injury sustained while exercising. The pain still persists when I try to run, but getting custom inserts made for my running shoes has gone a long way towards being active again. Besides the orthopedic inserts, I have a new and unlikely tool in my quest for better health: my Apple Watch.
Being a great song doesn’t automatically make it a great Rock Band song. To be a great song for the game, it has to be fun to play for everyone in the band. For example, I love “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys, but that’s song is mostly a repetitive drone of notes for the guitar and bass players, while rapping isn’t nearly as fulfilling as singing in the Rock Band engine. The soundtrack for Beatles: Rock Band is comprised of some of the greatest songs of all-time, but most of that stuff is easy to the point of being almost boring to play. Conversely, songs that really push the limits of each player may not be inherently great songs that you’d want to listen to.
Inspired by the upcoming release of Rock Band 4, I decided to create a list of songs that are some of my favourites to play. This list is highly subjective, as it’s based on my personal preferences and the difficulty I play on (for reference, I play everything on expert). Narrowing it down to 5 was really difficult, so I’m sure I left out a few gems. However, it also makes for a great conversation starter, as I’m sure that you’re favourite songs to play and your rationale behind that choice will differ. Without further ado, in no particular order, here are my 10 favourite songs to play in Rock Band!
On Monday, July 13th, Steff and I will be participating in our first board game tournament! We will be joining 28 others in a battle for Splendor supremacy. It’s a game that I think works great in a tournament environment, as it’s mechanics lend themselves well for strategic and tactical thinking. There’s also prizes for everyone involved to trick out your home copy of the game.
Win or lose, I think it’ll be a great time for all. At the very least, I’m guaranteed to get some sort of prize just for participating, and I get to play a game I really like with others. If you’re interested in participating, check out the event page on Facebook.
For Canadian gamers, E3 season is the most wonderful time of the year. Besides getting all of the news on upcoming games, Canadian retailers often put on great deals for pre-ordering games that are featured at the event. This year, Amazon stole the show with a whopping 30% off when you pre-order three or more games. Needless to say, my shopping cart ended with way more than that. Here’s what I got!
Up until this point, all of my Amiibo purchases have been tied to characters steeped in years of nostalgia. When I look at my collection, my heart still feels all warm and fuzzy as the memories flood in. So how then, did the Splatoon Amiibos end up here?
Board games, more than any other entertainment medium I can think of, rely heavily on medieval times as a backdrop. I guess ever since the invention of Chess – when it was actually contemporary at the time of its creation – the two have been inseparable. While I’m all for playing a great board game of any sort, medieval and fantasy themes generally don’t do it for me. In this post, I shine the spotlight on some of my favourite themes that don’t harken back to the middle ages!
Taking place just north of the border was Niagara Falls Comic Con. While Steff and I are no strangers to the Falls, it was our first time heading down there for the convention. Arriving just before opening on Saturday, thousands were lined up around the building, anxious to get in. Though we in Toronto are spoiled with a number of conventions of our own, I was really glad to have gone out of town for this one.
Niagara Falls Comic Con, here we come! For the first time, Steff and I will be heading out of town for a convention. Not expecting the scale of Fan Expo Canada, but I’m definitely looking forward to a Saturday of quality nerd time.
Some of the headlining guests include David Hasselhoff, Alfonso Ribeiro and Scott Wilson, best known as Hershel from The Walking Dead. Personally, I’m most pumped for the Howard Scott Warshaw panel, as he’s the guy that made E.T. on the Atari 2600. It would be an honour to have him autograph my copy!
My shopping list for the day is looking pretty thin, but maybe that’s a good thing. My gut says though I’ll have no problem breaking the bank once I get there. If you’re heading out to the show, hope you have a great time!

The immortal Wolverine was finally forced to face his own mortality after losing his healing factor a few years ago. During that span, he had many close calls and time to think about what awaits him on the other side. Last October, the inevitable happened, as Logan finally kicked the bucket in the four-part Death of Wolverine mini-series.
He’s one of my favourites, but I was alright with seeing him go. Even as a new comic book reader, I felt like he was in way too many books and he as a character kind of lost his identity. Furthermore, stories he was the focal point in were mostly bad, including the tale of his own demise. Death is rarely permanent in comics, and a character of Wolverine’s stature is guaranteed to come back eventually. But are we even getting a chance to miss him?
My history with Kirby is short. Despite his many appearances in Nintendo titles since the 80s, I’ve only played one Kirby game in earnest. That game was Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Featuring a wildly creative and adorable yarn-based art style, that game won me over with its look and clever gameplay.
I may play more Kirby titles in the future, but for now, he sits on my shelf with the rest of my Amiibo collection. It didn’t hurt that I got him on clearance at a Target closing sale, which certainly impacted this particular purchase. In any case, glad to have him as a reminder of the good times that came from that game, and hopefully they make another one!
