Super Mario Bros. 35 Review

With Tetris 99, Nintendo found a format for battle royale games that wasn’t a shooter. Personally, I was crossing my fingers for Tetris Attack/Puzzle League in that style. Will have to wait at least a bit longer.

For the time being, Nintendo takes their template in a wildly different direction. How about a Super Mario battle royale?

My Experience Taking the COVID-19 Test

Since the start of the pandemic, I’ve harboured a somewhat-rational fear of the COVID-19 test. Besides the educated guess that having something go higher up your nose than your finger would be an unpleasant experience, I actually have prior experience with something in the same realm.

During a time when I suffered from frequent nosebleeds, a specialist analyzed my case by using a camera that went way up there. Between the sensation of feeling the camera sliding deeper into my head and being able to actually see what the inside of my head looks like through the monitor, the idea of anything else going in my nasal cavity is something I’ve wanted to avoid. In my head, I’ve almost built up the test itself to be a bigger concern than actually getting sick.

As of writing, I can’t validate the latter. But now that I’ve experienced the former, I thought I’d share how that went. Especially for those who have concerns about taking a swab up the nose.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars Review

The original Super Mario All-Stars really made a mark on me. Beyond being a collection of some of greatest games ever made, Nintendo went the extra mile by updating the presentation of each game. It also included Lost Levels, which up until that point was never released outside of Japan. Sure, a case can be made that Nintendo should have left those alone. I, however, loved the fresh coat of paint.

Evoking the All-Stars moniker for Super Mario 3D All-Stars immediately makes me feel like there should be more to this compilation than just the games themselves. This time around, it feels like the package is a bit short on the extras. But does that really matter?

Celebrating the Life of Eddie Van Halen with a Few Classic Cuts!

Eddie Van Halen redefined what it meant to play the guitar. He cranked out a slew of hits with his band Van Halen while bewildering everyone with his unreal finger gymnastics. Bringing this into the world of video games for a moment, almost every Rock Band or Guitar Hero song that would be classified as Expert difficulty most likely is played in the style that Eddie Van Halen created. There is no “Through the Fire and Flames” without Eddie blazing fretboards decades prior.

His passing on October 6th really hit home for me. I talked about in great detail on stream and I don’t feel comfortable trying to write that out right now. Feel free to watch that segment, which includes baby Jett in diapers, rocking out to the work of Eddie Van Halen. Instead, I just wanted to take a moment to highlight a few of his works that I really enjoy. Whether you’re a bigger fan than I or are completely unfamiliar with his work, I hope you enjoy this collection of music!

Aspects of Super Mario Sunshine I Like

I have spent a lot of energy throwing shade at Super Mario Sunshine over the years. If anything, playing it again as part of Super Mario 3D All-Stars has only amplified my disdain for this GameCube title. The further I go, the more glaring its issues become, from its terrible camera, to its slippery controls, to its overly-punishing level design.

Even so, this game does have a few bright spots. Playing it now has reminded me that it isn’t all bad.

What You Should Know About Soundtrack by Twitch

The subject of using licensed music on Twitch has been a messy one since the platform’s inception. Some streamers have been hit with DMCA strikes, countless videos have been muted for containing licensed music, and many other streamers seem to use licensed music with no punishment whatsoever.

In hopes of clearing the air for what’s allowed on their platform, Soundtrack by Twitch provides streamers with a curated library of Twitch-safe music.

While I applaud Twitch for attempting to address the confusing subject of music use, Soundtrack by Twitch is not a silver bullet solution for everyone. Here are some tidbits you should know before committing to this music platform.
