As someone who runs a website about “video games, board games, and other nerdy pursuits”, my attraction to board games based on video games is particularly strong. Good or bad, I’m always fascinated to see how these video game franchises are translated to the tabletop.
Here are some of the board games based on video games that I own or have owned in the past! What board game adaptations of video games have you played?
Farming, fishing, foraging, and falling in love are just a sampling of the many activities one can partake in when they play the Stardew Valley video game. Whether you choose to do it all or just focus on the activities that suit you’re interests, there’s no shortage of things in the valley to keep you busy.
Now take everything there is to do in the Stardew Valley video game and cram that into a board game. As daunting of a task as that may be, board game designer Cole Medeiros and creator of Stardew Valley Concerned Ape attempted to do with this board game adaptation. While there’s no doubt that the board game pays homage to its source material, quirks in its design hurt it from reaching its full potential as a board game.

Board game adaptations of video games have existed for almost as long as the medium has existed. For instance, one of the neatest games in my board game collection is a copy of Berzerk; based on the 1980 arcade game. Of course, we can’t forget to mention the Pokemon Trading Card Game, which continues to be an absolute juggernaut in the tabletop gaming space.
But the latest franchise to go analog is…Stardew Valley?
Video games have a lot of growing up to do when it comes to the subject of love. Decades of catering to the taste of young boys has left the content a bit…emotionally-stunted. As such, those looking for a love-related content fix will heavily gravitate towards other mediums such as film, music, and literature instead.
To gaming’s credit, steps are being taken in the right direction. Gaming is starting to take on the subject in more thoughtful ways and I’m here for it! As we head towards Valentine’s Day, maybe a few of these games can get you in the spirit of the season, whether you’re madly in love or wrestling with heartbreak.
2020 was quite the year for In Third Person on Twitch. We shared a lot of laughs. Made a lot of new friends. Channel Points changed the show in a big way, allowing you to control the stream and hunt for shiny Snorlax. We also raised a mind-boggling amount of money for Extra Life!

Though I tend to be the type to ride from one hot new release to the next, 2020’s lineup was…subpar for me as a whole. Sure, there were a couple of games that made an impact on me, with one in particular that is likely to be crowned my personal Game of the Year. But for the most part, my year was defined by catching up on older games that slipped by me during their hey day. Here are some of the more notable titles I caught up on in 2020!

The Stardew Valley series is officially over. Thank you to everyone who enjoyed this journey at any point! Though now is a great time to take an extended break from a game we’ve been streaming for the past seven months (!), I wouldn’t count out a return to the valley at some point in the future.
