SoulCalibur for iPhone/iPad Review

Following in the foot steps of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and King of Fighters, SoulCalibur has made its way onto iOS. Unlike Street Fighter and King of Fighters, this SoulCalibur release is mostly a port of the 1999 original. 13 years later, does it still hold up? Does the experience get compromised by having to control it with a touch screen device? Most importantly, is SoulCalibur for iPhone and iPad worth the $15 regular price when its closest competition is roughly half of that?

Pick-Up Post: SoulCalibur for iOS

SoulCalibur for iOS is out now. While I am no good at any of the games in this series, I have picked up and enjoyed SoulCalibur II and IV in the past. I’ve been looking forward to this release even more so than SoulCalibur V on consoles because I’d personally get more out of an on-the-go SoulCalibur experience.

With that said, the price for the game is steep for an iOS game. Sure, the graphics look great in screenshots, has 19 characters and is a universal app that works on iPhone and iPad, but the ‘sale’ price of $11.99 is crazy steep. In a world where Street Fighter IV: Volt and King of Fighters i offer amazing fighting game experiences for as low as $0.99 when on sale, can SoulCalibur at a regular price of $14.99 hang? I have put the money up to find out on your behalf. Review coming soon!

Universal Fighting Game Guide: Tips to Overcome Bad Character Match-Ups

In virtually every fighting game, certain characters will have inherent advantages against others. More often than not, this is just the end result of character design factors that end up dictating how easy or difficult it will be for character A to defeat character B. In some cases, you may have to put in some elbow grease as the weaker character in order to win. Other times, trying to overcome a bad match-up can feel almost impossible.

Is it ever really impossible though? Let’s talk about what bad match-ups are, why they happen and things you can do to beat the odds.

Jett vs. Niysx in Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Version 2012

Jett Vs. is back! Sort of. Last time I ran this series of posts, they were universally ignored by readers for any number of reasons. Because the readers weren’t there and these posts take a lot of work to create, I decided to stop running the series. However, over the past few months of leveling up and working towards world domination, I’ve compiled what I think are some pretty good match videos worth sharing.

In this post, my Cammy faces off against Niysx’s M. Bison.

LG Street Fighter IV HD Global Championship Tournament

Remember when I said there would never be an EVO equivalent tournament for mobile players of Street Fighter IV? I’ll concede to being half wrong at the moment. While the mobile Street Fighter community has yet to mobilize and create their own tournaments (nor do I think that will happen after this), LG is launching their own tournament to promote the new LG Nitro and their exclusive port of Street Fighter IV HD. For those who don’t follow the Android scene, Street Fighter IV HD is essentially a port of Street Fighter IV: Volt on the iPhone.

While there will be a global tournament for Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Version 2012, what’s far more interesting here is the mobile tournament, which has a huge grand prize pot of $10,000.

Jett vs. Sherryjenix in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Version 2012

This edition of Jett vs. features Sherryjenix. She’s one of the most recognizable Street Fighter IV players in the scene thanks to her skilled C. Viper. Some of her recent accomplishments include taking out Combofiend at Wednesday Night Fights and placing 33rd at Canada Cup 2011, arguably the most talent-filled fighting game tournament to date. If you’d like to learn more about her, check out her site and check out this interview conducted by Rok the Reaper.

I was fortunate enough to play a few matches with her over XBOX Live and I thought the matches were worth sharing. Click through to watch our matches!

Game Design Talk – Is Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Too Big?

There is nothing about the Skyrim experience that you can describe as “small”. Everything from the size of the world, to the number of quests, to the number of ways to play that game are too large to quantify. Because of how much stuff there is to do in the game, I’m fairly certain that the majority of Skyrim players will never finish the main quest, let alone experience everything that game has to offer.

In spite of its girth, it amazes me how great Skyrim is on almost every front. With that said, could Skyrim have been an overall better game if it wasn’t so grand?

Time For a Street Fighter Break

A few months ago, there was a change in my approach to Street Fighter IV. While I’ve taken the game seriously for awhile now, there was a very different motivation driving my play. At first, it started out as a focus on getting better. But as that improvement happened, I noticed that I was within reach of some lofty milestones. When I realized that being the #1 ranked Rose and Cammy player in Canada was within my reach, I made the conscious decision to put all of my gaming energy towards meeting those goals. For better or worse, mission accomplished.

Universal Fighting Game Guide: Resets

Welcome back to In Third Person’s Universal Fighting Game Guide! I hope you enjoy reading these posts as I do writing them, because I have put a lot of thought and heart into this series of posts.

Today, let’s talk about one of my favourite advanced tactics in fighting games: the reset.
