Off-Topic: Time Capsule Blog Idea

Many years ago, while looking at my blog’s publishing options, thought it’d be a cool idea to start a blog and write posts that wouldn’t get published until 100 years from now. I’d write about my life and the happenings of the early 2000s and beyond, and when the 2100s hits, this random time capsule blog will start publishing posts out of the blue, detailing life as it were 100 years ago. There something romantic to the idea that I love. However, the idea is heavily dependent on these blogging mechanisms of today still working a century from now. Say what you will about the major blogging players today, but who the heck knows what will exist tomorrow? Oh well, one can dream.

Why I Love Wolverine in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Wolverine is my second favourite comic book character of all-time. I’ve always been a fan of his lone wolf mentality, heart-driven decisions, and adamantium claws that he liberally uses to slice foes into confetti. Upon the release of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, I picked him up right away and haven’t looked back. Even if he sucked, I’d probably find a way to make use of him, though he just so happens to be awesome in this series. In a modern world of Zero, Vergil and Dr. Doom players, here’s why I use Logan.

I don’t like this style of game, but…

During Black Friday, I bought a copy of LEGO: Marvel Super Heroes. Historically, I haven’t been a fan of the LEGO games, as I don’t have fun playing them. Quite frankly, I suck at them. I always get stuck on the puzzles, even though they’re designed for little kids to figure out. In spite of that, I still bought this in hopes that the Marvel license and a sale price of $25 would be the turning point. After two hours of disappointing play time, I packed it up and traded it in.

The “I normally don’t like this style but…” purchase is one that, in hindsight, I make way too often.

Off-Topic: The Next Classic Christmas Song

There are no shortage of classic Christmas songs in the hypothetical Great Christmas Songbook. From more religious fare such as Silent Night, to child-friendly favourites like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, to more contemporary tunes like Last Christmas by Wham, there’s seemingly an endless stream of hot holiday jams. However, it’s been a long time since a new Christmas song has reached classic status. If my calculations are correct, the last song to hit classic status is All I Want For Christmas is You by Mariah Carey circa 1994. Why hasn’t any Christmas song reached that plateau since?

The Backlog Versus Reality

Backlog

This is one of my backlog shelves. I strategically position them in a way that it is easiest for me to reach while I’m sitting at my gaming desk. I like to think that having those particular games sit in prime shelf space serve as a reminder that I want to get around to these eventually. Between physical and digital releases, I have a few dozen unplayed games lying around.

Having the luxury to play something new to me at a moment’s notice is nice. However, there is a certain point where the expectation of completing a backlog becomes unrealistic.

Top 10 Games of This Generation – Honourable Mention: Grand Theft Auto V

I never understood the insanely high praise that Grand Theft Auto IV got from critics. Sure, it was a great game for its time, but I had some fundamental issues with its story and gameplay that stop me from calling it a masterpiece. I wasn’t much of a Niko Belic fan, whose empty words about chasing the American Dream meant nothing when his in-game actions reflected those of a cold-hearted sociopath. I thought the game’s story took too long to ramp up. I also hated driving in that game, as all of the cars were a nightmare to steer with any sort of precision.

Grand Theft Auto V goes well beyond simply addressing those faults to provides an experience that’s incredible in scope and detail.

Top 10 Games of This Generation – Honourable Mention – Assassin’s Creed II

Over the course of this generation, the Assassin’s Creed series has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Right now, the series is arguably at its lowest point, as Assassin’s Creed III was mired with bugs, poor game design choices and an uninteresting protagonist. Though Ubisoft has dug themselves quite the hole with their last two sub-par entries in the series, I continue to hold out hope that they’ll find a way to recapture the magic they created with Assassin’s Creed II.

The Great Game Purge of 2013

photo(26)Pictured above is a receipt about two feet long. After making a snap judgment to trade in Battlefield 4, I also decided that there were 21 other games that were due to go, too. I generally don’t like to trade in games. Part of that is from the relatively low payouts that stores usually give. Also, after an incident many years ago where I was robbed of almost all of my video games, I’ve grown reluctant to let anything go. If a game has any sort of sentimental quality to me, or if I feel like I’ll ever want to play it again, I’ll keep it. However, over the course of many years, I took chances on a number of games that ultimately didn’t prove fruitful. Along with Battlefield 4, I blew out many of them in one fell swoop.

Batman: Arkham Asylum surprised the world. Expectations for licensed superhero games were at an all-time low, and this was far from the usual crap. For many (myself included), Arkham Asylum was a legitimate game of the year contender. Instead of falling into the sophomore jinx, Batman: Arkham City builds upon a solid foundation to create the pinnacle superhero game.
