Pick-Up Post: April 2014 Reading Material

All is more or less still quiet on the video game front, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Having that extra free time has been beneficial for going to the gym or playing hoops. Hopefully, I’ll be able to turn some of that extra free time into a better body, but I certainly wouldn’t turn down any hot video games if there were any of interest coming my way.

In the meantime, things are only heating up on the comics side. April has been a great month for expanding my collection with back catalogue books while sampling some of the newer stuff that’s outside of my current reading list. With May being the month for the next installments of Batman, All New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men and X-Men, things are only going to pick up from here. Check out the April stash below!

Our haul from this one features a strategy game from the makers of Ticket to Ride, a Kickstarter-funded card game, a board game designed by Richard Garfield of Magic: The Gathering fame, and a dice game that’s barely a game.

Yomi Review

photo 4(1)I really appreciate board games that do a great job of marrying their mechanics and theme together into one cohesive experience. Some of my favourite games that deliver on this include Formula D and Legendary: A Marvel Deck-Building Game. The former provides players with a cool sensation of racing through dice, while the latter creates a dramatic battle of good versus evil through the now-ubiquitous deck building mechanic. Originally designed as an officially licensed Street Fighter card game, Yomi aims to do something similar by translating the fighting game experience through cards. Does it deliver on that promise?

The Board Game Shopping Experience

As a tabletop newbie with a lifetime of video game experience, I’ve noticed that shopping for tabletop games is very different from what I’m used to. With video games, they’re widely available at many different stores. Pricing for new titles is the same across all stores. Also, after a certain period of time, prices on games drop dramatically. Over time, I’ve come to learn that shopping for board games is not like that at all.

The Backlog Versus Reality

Backlog

This is one of my backlog shelves. I strategically position them in a way that it is easiest for me to reach while I’m sitting at my gaming desk. I like to think that having those particular games sit in prime shelf space serve as a reminder that I want to get around to these eventually. Between physical and digital releases, I have a few dozen unplayed games lying around.

Having the luxury to play something new to me at a moment’s notice is nice. However, there is a certain point where the expectation of completing a backlog becomes unrealistic.

The Great Game Purge of 2013

photo(26)Pictured above is a receipt about two feet long. After making a snap judgment to trade in Battlefield 4, I also decided that there were 21 other games that were due to go, too. I generally don’t like to trade in games. Part of that is from the relatively low payouts that stores usually give. Also, after an incident many years ago where I was robbed of almost all of my video games, I’ve grown reluctant to let anything go. If a game has any sort of sentimental quality to me, or if I feel like I’ll ever want to play it again, I’ll keep it. However, over the course of many years, I took chances on a number of games that ultimately didn’t prove fruitful. Along with Battlefield 4, I blew out many of them in one fell swoop.
