ARMS 5.1 Finally Includes A Mode With All Arms Unlocked

Finally!

One of the biggest knocks against ARMS was the inability to play a local versus match with all arms unlocked. This greatly hampered the tournament scene, as tournament organizers simply didn’t have the time to unlock every arm for every copy of the game. As such, tournaments up until now have been forced to use default arms for each character, undermining the core game design and severely limiting the meta.

Now with the 5.1 patch, players will have access to a Tournament mode that unlocks all arms. You will be locked out of other modes and records will not be kept, but that’s fine for the purposes of running a local tournament.

This is great news for a fighter that continues to get better. Plus, with the game having sold about 250,000 copies in Q4 2017, the game now has an install base of 1.6 million, making it a great success for a new fighting game IP. Now if they could only fix the lag in LAN play…

My Game of the Year for 2017 is…

Game of the year is a weird award for an individual person to reward. Who am I, as one man, to make a bold declaration on which one of the thousands of video games is the best? Especially when I’ve probably played less than 20 of them this year?

The reality is, I can declare my own personal game of the year just like anyone else. How one comes to that conclusion is irrelevant. For me, it’s all about which game I played this year was the best and most impactful, with a tendency to weight the latter more heavily. In a year where I named Catherine my game of the year over Skyrim, I still believe I made the right call. I clamor for the day when a sequel to Catherine would arrive, though I’ve been largely over Skyrim since I completed it years ago.

Biggest Game Surprise of 2017

2017 has certainly been an eventful one for the video game industry. From Nintendo’s resurrection off the strength of the Nintendo Switch, to the franchise-crushing disappointment of Mass Effect: Andromeda, there was a lot about this year that we didn’t see coming.

SteamWorld Dig 2 Review

Having it loaded up on my 3DS, I powered through that game with joy while on a train ride to Montreal. Years later, the sequel is here with a new protagonist and some new tricks up her sleeves.

Rocket League on the Nintendo Switch Review

Beyond being a best-seller on every platform its been on, this vehicular soccer game has found a second wind as an eSports title. With the title showing no signs of slowing down, it blasts onto the Nintendo Switch with cross-platform play and some Nintendo exclusive cars.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 Coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch

Sega’s innovative strategy series Valkyria Chronicles is getting a new sequel. Unlike the poorly-received spin-off that came out recently, Valkyria Chronicles 4 marks a return of the franchise’s unique blend of turn-based strategy and third-person combat. While I never finished the first game, I really enjoyed what I played of it. With it coming out to the Switch, I think I would prefer to play this on that device, as I would gladly sacrifice some graphical fidelity in exchange for the convenience of the platform. Being able to play a meaty strategy game on my commute would be perfect. Looking forward to playing this one in 2018!
