ARMS 5.1 Finally Includes A Mode With All Arms Unlocked

Finally!

One of the biggest knocks against ARMS was the inability to play a local versus match with all arms unlocked. This greatly hampered the tournament scene, as tournament organizers simply didn’t have the time to unlock every arm for every copy of the game. As such, tournaments up until now have been forced to use default arms for each character, undermining the core game design and severely limiting the meta.

Now with the 5.1 patch, players will have access to a Tournament mode that unlocks all arms. You will be locked out of other modes and records will not be kept, but that’s fine for the purposes of running a local tournament.

This is great news for a fighter that continues to get better. Plus, with the game having sold about 250,000 copies in Q4 2017, the game now has an install base of 1.6 million, making it a great success for a new fighting game IP. Now if they could only fix the lag in LAN play

NBA Playgrounds FINALLY Gets Patched on the Nintendo Switch

NBA Playgrounds launched in a rough state. Featuring blurry visuals in handheld mode and a confusing shooting system while lacking online play, the game fell short of rekindling the NBA Jam fire. Not all hope was lost when developer Saber Interactive promised a patch that would magically fix everything. Unfortunately for Switch owners, the patch just arrived, months after the fact.

The wait has been terrible. I’m guessing by this point, everyone who bought the game has moved on. But maybe this patch will at least give those players incentive to try it again. The game now looks a bit better in handheld mode, sports online play, and now has a shot meter to make it clear when you need to release the button in order to make the basket. Furthermore, accuracy has been tuned in order to make layups easier and 3-pointers harder.

At some point, I’ll stream this game again to show off the new updates. I might write some sort of impressions piece as well as a means of closing out my review. Not sure if I can recommend prospective buyers from jumping in now, but at the very least, fans who felt burned by NBA Playgrounds the first time around may finally get the game we were hoping for.

The Return of Street Fighter X Tekken?

In a recent interview with Famtisu.com, Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono had some interesting things to say about the future of Street Fighter X Tekken.

Ono: In Street Fighter X Tekken’s case, if we’re able to get just a little more development budget allocated to the project, I think we might release one more patch for the game. We’ve even got the details of what we’d change in the patch planned out.

Tsubaki: Is that so!? But in all honesty, what I’m hoping for here is a sequel to the game. After all, even with Capcom vs. SNK, it wasn’t until CvS2 that it became a huge hit. Even today it’s still hailed as an incredible fighting game. So I was hoping for a similar development to happen with Street Fighter X Tekken.

Ono: That’s what I’ve always been telling the company too. But at the end of the day, there are just some brick walls that a salaryman can never overcome *laughs*. For instance, if a game doesn’t sell over 2 million copies, then we’d have to put the brakes on any plans for a sequel. All that means is that we weren’t capable enough. And all we can do after that is to reflect on the experience, take what we can learn from it, and try to apply those lessons on some other title.

Having thought that the game died a long time ago, it’s interesting to see anything about it now. Does the franchise deserve another shot?

Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition is Getting a Free Balance Patch This Year

Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition has been a huge disappointment for me. While most casual players won’t notice much of a difference to the core game from what’s found in the previous two iterations of Street Fighter IV, competitive players have been crying foul about Arcade Edition’s character balance since its launch in late 2010. I didn’t get my hands on it until early June, but it didn’t take me long to notice that their vision to intentionally unbalance Arcade Edition did not jive with what I wanted out of the game. Because of my bitterness around Capcom breaking what I felt wasn’t broken, I lost interest in playing Street Fighter IV competitively.

It looks like I wasn’t alone in this view, as Capcom has recently announced that they’re going to do something about it.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Patch Nerfs Sentinel and Makes Yesterday’s Post Irrelevant*

*Not fully irrelevant, but almost

Yesterday, Capcom released a patch for Marvel vs. Capcom 3, which they said would activate Event Mode within the game. What they didn’t tell us was that the patch included a number of balance changes and bug fixes as well.

While most of the changes will be glossed over, the news of Sentinel being nerfed has made quite the splash within the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 community.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood 1.03 Patch Does Not Fix Game-Breaking Glitch

A few days ago, Ubisoft released the 1.03 patch for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood on the PlayStation 3. I’m assuming that this patch was also released to XBOX 360 players. If you were a victim of the Animus glitch like me, and you were hoping that the next update would fix it, I’ve got some bad news for you.

(Spoilers: the answer is in the title of this post)
