Dicey Dungeons Review

The Roguelike genre continues to evolve thanks to pairing Roguelike elements with other game styles. Moonlighter essentially turned The Legend of Zelda into a Roguelike. Into the Breach was a Roguelike twist on Advance Wars that added infinite replayability. Slay the Spire drew from the deck-building genre of tabletop games and applied the Roguelike template to it to create a wildly-addicting game I couldn’t put down for 100+ hours.

Showing the world that the Roguelike still has a lot of room to grow, Dicey Dungeons draws from the world of dice games for yet another new take on the genre.

I Completed My First Battle Pass And I Don’t Think I’ll Ever Do This Again

Popularized by Fortnite, the battle pass as a content distribution method in video games has become a staple in gaming. When one purchases a battle pass, they can unlock a series of perks through the course of regular play. However, if you fail to unlock every perk before the allotted time, those perks are gone forever. As such, those who partake in the battle pass grind are heavily incentivized to buy early and play frequently to squeeze every last reward out of their investment.

Though I’ve played games that contained battle passes in the past, the Frigid Haul battle pass within Rogue Company is the first one I’ve ever actively worked towards completing. Do I feel better about my life having gone through the process? No.

The Frustrating Decentralization of PC RGB Lighting Management

RGB lighting might be the single biggest cliche in PC culture. But when I powered on my new PC for the first time and saw the glow of my CPU and RAM, I was in love. Since then, I’ve gotten a few more devices that support RGB, including a mouse, keyboard, and mouse pad. By happenstance, the new graphics card also has an RGB emblem, which is a nice bonus.

Seeing the lights in full bloom continues to be a treat. Unfortunately, managing them has proven to be a nightmare, especially if you want every device to glow in sync.

Some of My Favourite Roguelike and Rogue-lite Games (So Far)

For a long time, I actively avoided the Roguelike genre. Based on my limited understanding of how these games worked, the threat of losing all of your progress upon death had no appeal to me whatsoever.

Two aspects of the genre got me to change my tune. One, the advent of Rogue-lites made punishment less severe. Instead of losing everything when you die, your hero would gain permanent upgrades during each run, making successive runs a bit easier while also providing value to failed runs. Two, the Rogue-lite format has permeated beyond the dungeons of yesteryear. From action games, to turn-based strategy tiles, and even card games have caught the Rogue-lite bug. Having Rogue-lite elements incorporated into game genres I love has gone a long way towards me appreciating Rogue-lites and Roguelikes as a whole.

Here are some of my favourites!

Learning How to Play PC Games with Keyboard & Mouse

“This is embarrassing.”

I’m at the very beginning of Cyberpunk 2077 and the game wants me to pick a dialogue choice. I click on the line I want to say. Nothing happens. I start to hit a bunch of buttons with no luck. How hard can it be to select a line of dialogue?

Turns out, all I had to do was press F, which is the main interact button in the game. It even says it on the screen, though it’s faded into the background a bit and I wasn’t sure that this prompt was trying to tell me to press F.

Despite having used a keyboard and mouse for pretty much my whole life, using it within the context of gaming has been an uphill climb.

You’re Too Buggy For Me Right Now Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a fascinating game in its current state. On PC, it’s visually stunning (sorry console players). I’m really into the story it’s trying to tell. Also, the soundtrack is fantastic!

But it’s also incredibly buggy. In a two-hour stretch of gameplay, I had to restart the game on three separate occasions to address game-breaking glitches. Here’s what went down and here’s why I’ll come back to this game a little later when ore of its issues have been resolved.

(NOTE: I will try my best to avoid spoilers, but proceed with a smidgen of caution. And in case you’re wondering, I’m playing this on PC with an RTX 3060Ti graphics card.)

Unboxing the Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060Ti OC Edition Graphics Card

“Damn it!”

It’s 9:11am and I missed the online launch of the RTX 3060Ti graphics cards. In the midst of my dismay, I clicked on a few listings and saw that some cards were available for in-store pickup starting at 10am. Presumably first come, first serve.

Guess who stood in line for about 40 minutes in the freezing cold? And guess who got an Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060Ti OC Edition graphics card? This guy.

Let’s crack this thing open!
