Yesterday, Nintendo finally stepped forward with its first full Nintendo Direct in over a year. It was great to see so many announcements jam-packed in a 50-minute presentation. Though I won’t cover everything here, I will highlight a few trailers that really caught my attention!

Early Thoughts on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Despite the series success over the years, critics of the Zelda series have knocked it for being too formulaic. I don’t play enough Zelda games to feel that way, but I understand the point. With that said, I loved Twilight Princess and still believe that Ocarina of Time is one of the greatest video games of all-time.
Going into Skyward Sword, I was super-excited to jump back into the land of Hyrule to save the princess and save the world. As of writing, I’m at the front steps of the second dungeon, and my excitement has cooled off considerably.
Game Design Talk: Video Games With Slow Starts
I’m currently in the process of playing The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Zelda games have been the subject of much debate in terms of game design, but today I’d like to focus on one particular aspect of the game. The first 90 minutes to two hours of that game are slow. Painfully slow. As a Zelda fan, I’m willing to ‘tough it out’ through the intro piece of the game for the sweet, meaty filling, but it shouldn’t ever have to be this way for any game.
Gaming-Related Christmas Gifts I Received: 2011 Edition
Hope your holidays were full of cheer, turkey and great gifts. At my age, Christmas is definitely more about giving than receiving, though I did receive some excellent gifts this year from the ones I love. Since this is a gaming blog most of the time, I thought I’d share with you what I found under my Christmas tree. I’d love to hear what you got for Christmas in the comments, too!
Jett’s Open Letter to Santa: 2011 Edition
Dear Santa,
First off, on behalf of the people of the world, thank you so much for your ongoing efforts to make this world a joyous place during the holiday season.
With the noble stuff out of the way, let me get greedy for a minute. Though I feel selfish, especially at this point in my life, I guess I’m still entitled to receive something from you as long as I’ve been a good boy this year, right? If so, can I give you a few gaming-related suggestions in no particular order?
