The Rise of Tabletop Gaming

Back in my day, tabletop gaming wasn’t ‘cool’. They were played by kids, families, and nerds that I thought were far more nerdy than I. At the very least, that’s how I saw it. Even as late as my first experience at Fan Expo in 2010, I went into the tabletop gaming section and passed judgment with extreme prejudice.

What a difference a year makes. After being tricked by my girlfriend to partake in her friend’s Dominion night, I’ve actively partaken in many tabletop gaming nights and am slowly expanding my horizons in the genre. Apparently, I’m late to the party, because I get the sense that this scene has been in the midst of a resurgence for quite some time.

Though I’m reluctant to call myself a Fire Emblem: Awakening connoisseur, I did beat the game 4 times (and would gladly do it again). Ridiculous Fishing Review

Ridiculous Fishing is the latest iOS game to catch a ton of positive buzz from the gaming press. Had I not heard this game talked about on every podcast I listen to over the past few weeks, I probably would have let this one slip by. Then again, sometimes the gaming press has led me astray. Did this one win me over like it supposedly won over every gaming journalist on the planet?

What If BioShock Infinite Wasn’t A Shooter?

I’m smitten with Bioshock Infinite. The game does such an amazing job of pushing the boundaries of what game worlds, characters and stories can be. Though it also does its combat really well, it also feels like the most antiquated and gamey part of the experience. For a game that pushes so many aspects of the medium forward, what if it could push the gameplay as well?

What Do You Want in a Street Fighter IV Update?

Capcom announced at PAX East that Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition was getting another balance patch. Though I’m mostly fine with the game in its current state, it’s a smart way to keep the competitive scene active, which has proven critical to the success of this game.

BioShock Infinite Review

The sour taste in my mouth from BioShock 2 washed away within minutes of booting up BioShock Infinite. Unlike its predecessor, which reeked of cash grab from every pore, Infinite feels like a genuine attempt at artistic expression, while pushing the video game boundaries of storytelling and gameplay. This is the sequel I’ve wanted all along and it’s awesome.

An Ode to Rock Band

On one hand, the news of Harmonix’s last round of Rock Band DLC hitting today shouldn’t have stung me as much as it did. I haven’t picked up a plastic instrument in years and had no plans of going back. However, this franchise has left an undeniable mark on my life since its 2007 debut and it’s sad to see the curtains finally close on an old friend.

Check Out My Darkstalkers Resurrection Review on Splitkick.com

Next on the list of fighting game HD ports for Capcom is Darkstalkers Resurrection. This compilation features the second and third games in the series, as well as many of the modern trimmings found in their previous HD ports. Unlike Marvel vs. Capcom: Origins before it, the source material holds up much better and the modern features are really well integrated into the package. I enjoyed this one a lot more than I thought I would.

Three Months Later, Did Rocksmith Really Teach Me How to Play Guitar?

Just over 3 months ago, I got Rocksmith as a Christmas present from Steff. My initial impressions of it were generally positive, though something like this really takes time to pass judgment. Have I made any progress since?
