Why Fighting Games Are Awesome

In 2009, Street Fighter IV changed my life.

Having taken an extended hiatus from the fighting game genre, Street Fighter IV roped me in for good. The transition wasn’t instant, as I gave up the game initially after losing dozens of matches in a row online. However, once I watched my first fighting game tournament live stream, it opened my eyes to how great fighting games can be when you have a deeper understanding of how to play them. As I tried to emulate the likes of Gootecks, Mike Ross, and Justin Wong, I found myself falling in love with the genre in a way that I’d never loved any other type of game.

Since 2009, fighting games have grown to become my favourite of any gaming genre. Here’s why!

Finding My Way as a Content Creator in the Modern Internet

I entered the video game blogosphere in 2009 with one simple goal: share my thoughts on gaming with the world. There were no ambitions on my end to be the next IGN, PewDiePie, or Angry Video Game Nerd, but I felt like I had a lot of things to say and maybe I would find some sort of audience along the way. In that time, In Third Person has generated over 400,000 pageviews, over 30,000 video views on YouTube and Facebook. With the Amazon Affiliate program, I’ve even made a few dollars here and there. Nothing that allows me to quit my full time job, but some bonus scratch is always welcome.

Truly thankful to you and everyone else that has supported my musings for the better part of a decade. That being said, the world of being a content creator is very different in 2017. Seeing it evolve, and taking the lessons I’ve learned along the way, let me take a look in the mirror and see where I stand.

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection

Better late than never!

After finally getting its ducks in a row with the Mega Man franchise, Capcom seems to be doing the same with Street Fighter. Pretty much every major version of the franchise from Street Fighter 1 through 3 are coming in one package at a discount price. On top of that, Hyper Fighting, Super Turbo, Alpha 3, and Third Strike will all feature online play.

While I have numerous copies of these games in different forms, it’ll be super convenient to have them all in one place. Might even double dip with the PS4 version to play online or at home with my fightstick, along with the Switch version for portable action.

This compilation will be out in May of 2018. Can’t come soon enough!

Why Good Board Games Struggle to Make it to The Table

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game is a fantastic strategy game that puts each player at the helm of one of the major houses in the franchise. Despite my love for it, that game is collecting dust on our shelf. Just because I own it and because it’s good doesn’t mean I’m going to play it into the ground. The reality is, there are factors about that and other board games in my collection that make it very difficult for them to make it on the table. Here’s a couple of reasons why games I enjoy struggle to get played.

Fast & Furious: Full Throttle Review

Long before the series transitioned into the world of action, the Fast & Furious franchise focused on street racing. Fast & Furious: Full Throttle is a tabletop take on the series’ racing roots. Players will compete against each other in street races, vying for first place, without any of the punching and stunt work that would work its way into the action later. Does this licensed racing game have the nitro it needs to push it across the finish line?

SteamWorld Dig 2 Review

The original SteamWorld Dig was an indie darling that seamlessly fused together elements of Dig Dug, Minecraft, and Metroid. Having it loaded up on my 3DS, I powered through that game with joy while on a train ride to Montreal. Years later, the sequel is here with a new protagonist and some new tricks up her sleeves.

50 Gen 3 Pokemon and a New Weather System Coming Soon for Pokemon Go

Weeks after Gen 3 made its subtle debut as part of the Halloween event, 50 more Pokemon from the Hoenn region will soon be making their debuts in Pokemon Go. This includes Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip. It will also introduce a dynamic weather system to the game that will impact in-game activity based on what’s happening in your immediate surroundings.

Capcom Reveals Mega Man 11 Coming Late 2018

On a recent Capcom Unity live stream, they revealed that the Blue Bomber would make his triumphant return in late 2018 with Mega Man 11. It’s been seven years since the release of Mega Man 10, and fans have waited even longer for an entry in the series that moves past the 8-bit aesthetic.
