Quarter Up: The Evolution of the Video Game Business Model

I hate the concept of free-to-play games. As someone who has grown up mostly buying boxed copies of video games at the store, I greatly dislike the idea of being given a game for free and then constantly harassed to pay later in exchange for cosmetic items or other things that directly impact my enjoyment of the experience. The fact that these games are wholly designed to maximize profits rather than to fully-realize a great gameplay experience is something I find rather gross.

Having said that, it’s easy to lose sight of the big picture. Video games have always been influenced by the business model behind them. Even if you go back to the arcade days where the monetization of the medium began, there was a business model driving that experience, too.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time Review

Up until this point, I had never played a Sly Cooper game before. During its heyday, I was a big PlayStation hater and wanted nothing to do with Sony’s gaming endeavours. Since I bought a PlayStation 3 a few years back, I’ve been slowly making my way through the platform’s signature franchises. I can now cross Sony’s sneaky raccoon off the list, as I’ve played through Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. Admittedly, I didn’t think I’d get much out of this stealth platformer, but it managed to impress nonetheless.

Saboteur Review

SaboteurSaboteur is a game of deception and greed. Everyone plays the role of an elf that’s mining for gold. However, some of your party is looking to get the goods through nefarious means. You know that one or more members of your party aren’t on the up-and-up, but you don’t know who. Or maybe you’re the saboteur that’s looking to thwart everyone’s quest for gold. How far will you go to come out on top?

Pokemon X/Y Review

Jumping into the world of Pokemon for the first time this late into the franchise’s life like I did is daunting. It immediately throws you into a world where you’re mom is totally cool with letting you travel across a giant city on your own by foot. It’s a world where everyone from toddlers to grandmothers are constantly picking battles with you for no apparent reason. Beyond trying to grasp the ridiculousness of its fiction, I found that Pokemon X/Y is a dense game that assumes you’ve already played every entry in the series before. While I’m sure that master Pokemon trainers would enjoy how this cuts to the chase, as a newbie I floundered through its first 8 hours and almost gave up on it.

Then, after crossing what I thought was the most frustrating stretch of the game, it suddenly clicked for me. I finally got a grasp on many of the RPG elements that the game doesn’t really teach. The path forward became clear…most of the time. Most importantly, I began having fun with it.

Starting From the Comic Book Bottom

Comic books have influenced my life for as long as I can remember through movies, cartoons, video games, toys and more. However, up until recently, I’ve never actually read a legitimate comic book in earnest. For most of my life, I perceived the act of reading comic books as something that was too nerdy for me. By the time I warmed up to the idea, I had no idea where to start. With almost 100 years worth of DC and Marvel content out there, picking a logical starting point proved difficult.

Some Thoughts Before The Release of DC Comics Deck-Building Game: Heroes Unite

DC Comics Deck-Building Game: Heroes UniteJust before Christmas, I had a pre-order in place for DC Comics Deck-Building Game: Heroes Unite. I like the first game for what it is, and this standalone game also acts as an expansion for it. However, common sense got the best of me when I realized that putting my money down for this now would just cut Steff off from one potential gift idea. As it turns out, the game would get pushed back to February 26th.

Though this would have been a done deal by had it come out during its initial release window, but now I’m not so sure if this is deserving of my money.

Jett Plays X-Men

I use this arcade classic as an excuse to talk about all things X-Men related, including the 90s cartoon, the Legendary deck-building game, an underrated X-Men title on the SNES and more.

Gears of War: Judgment Impressions

I felt like Gears of War 3 was the perfect end for the series on Xbox 360. It further fine-tuned an already great formula while finally providing a narrative that was worth a damn. Had the series taken a hiatus until the next generation of consoles were ready, I would have been perfectly happy with that. Instead, we got Gears of War: Judgment, an unnecessary prequel that let me down in a big way.
