Having a Different Opinion is Okay

Seemingly every few days, I run into threads on ResetEra, Twitter, and other places where gaming conversations take place where gamers ask for help in finding enjoyment in a popular or critically-acclaimed game. While there are rare instances when someone is actually doing something wrong that prevents them from seeing a game in its best light, most of the time it’s simply a matter of taste. When did having a unique perspective become problematic?

Ashe is Revealed as the Latest Overwatch Character

Now that I’ve had a few days to recover from Extra Life, let’s catch up on the Overwatch news!

McCree’s old buddy Ashe makes her debut in Overwatch! She packs quite the punch, from her single-shot rifle that she can aim with a sight, to a powerful shotgun that gives her the equivalent of a rocket jump, to the ability to blast shields with DDT. She also has B.O.B. as her ultimate, a separate character who runs on screen to wreak havoc.

Though the game already has a ton of Damage-class characters, she looks great! Love her visual and gameplay design; particularly the super jump with the shotgun. Looking forward to playing as her in the future!

Onto the next one…

A little while back, I completed New Super Mario Bros. U in a series of live streams. Beating the game was never part of the plan. However, after that first stream, we were almost half way through and I was having a lot of fun. It was a rare moment for me, as I don’t really take the time to go back and revisit old games.

We Just Conquered the Extra Life 25-Hour Gaming Marathon!

We did it! The show started at 8am on November 3rd, but it’s truly been months – if not years – in the making. So glad that we were all able to pull this together to help raise an amazing $800 for the Children’s Miracle Network of Hospitals! Technically, the show is still going, as Randy and Jenna want to play more Overwatch, but I’m going to get some much-needed rest.

A now, a few words of thanks.

  • Thank you to all of the donors whose generosity will help improve the lives of patients and staff at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto!
  • Thank you to my wife and Executive Producer of the marathon, Steff. She helped with the planning of virtually every aspect of this marathon, including all of the work behind the scenes to ensure that everyone was comfortable throughout this insane journey.
  • Thank you to my cousin Adrienne for lending us her photography lights and backdrop.
  • Thank you to all of the special guests who appeared during the marathon and on the streams leading up to the big show! Randy, Jenna, Mat, Jon, Jason, Laura, Kris, Rachel, Michelle, Jascha, Janis, and Dusty; you’re all rock stars and your time and effort towards supporting the cause was greatly appreciated!
  • Bonus shout-out to Kris & Rachel the extra effort they put into figuring out co-streaming with me. We didn’t get to use it for the marathon, but until Squad Streaming sees the light of day, that extra effort will pay off in our future streaming adventures together.
  • Thank you to everyone who tuned in! We hope that we put on a great show for you and your support helped us get through this fun-but-difficult marathon!

It took a lot of effort from many people to pull this all together, but I think it was well worth it for the money we raised for the kids and the fun times we had. Until next time….time for me to get some much-needed sleep.

5 Reasons Why You Should Check Out Paladins

Ever since I started playing it a few months ago, I have been a champion for Paladins. While the hero shooter space is dominated by one big player who I will try to avoid using by name in this piece, its presence doesn’t invalidate the fun to be had in the alternative created by Hi-Rez Studios. Yet on numerous occasions, I’ve seen and heard from players that they won’t touch Paladins with a 10-foot pole because they’re either fans of “the other game” and don’t want to let go, or they dismiss it for not being the “other game”.

That other game is fantastic. In fact, nowadays, I play it more than this one. Ultimately, you’re allowed to play or not play whatever you like. However, I think it’s unfair how overlooked Paladins is relative to what it has to offer. Because of that, I was inspired to make this list of five reasons why you should check out Paladins!

Falling Behind in Street Fighter V

For almost a decade, my prowess in Street Fighter has been an integral part of my gaming identity. Making the climb from scrub to 17th at the WorldGaming national championships many years later, I put everything I had into being the best I could be and it paid off. It proved to me that my knowledge and talents in games can go incredibly far if I really put my mind to it. Not only did all of that effort pay off for Street Fighter, but it increased my overall fighting game chops considerably to the point where I was a worthy adversary in almost every other fighting game I touched.

Flash forward to the present. Due to my personal grievances with the way the game was designed and the meta that built around it, I left Street Fighter V behind. I’d poke in here and there to check out new characters or major additions, but my time trying to be the best was behind me. Coming back to the game now in light of the update that reduces input lag only amplifies how far we’ve drifted apart.
