Will You Ever Grow Out of Video Games?

A few months ago, my dad came down to the basement as I was playing a video game. I don’t remember which game, but I guess that’s irrelevant to the story. He said something that kind of struck a chord with me. “Are you ever gonna give this up?”

Once upon a time, video games used to be a kids-only deal. My dad used to be into games during the Atari/golden era of arcades, but he pretty much dropped games because that’s what adults did at the time. I’m well into my 20s, but I haven’t let the medium go and don’t plan on doing so any time soon. He’s still confused as to why I haven’t given up this ‘kiddie thing’.

Pick-Up Post: More Blockbuster Liquidation Madness

The hoopla surrounding the closure of many Blockbuster stores died fairly quickly in my area. One day removed from the start of the liquidation sales, and the lines that once wrapped around the store had dwindled to four or five people per store. While most of the good stuff had been quickly snatched away on the first day, I was able to find a few games that piqued my interest on day two of the sale. Here’s what I grabbed:

Let’s Talk About E3

The most exciting time for gaming news is almost upon us! E3 is just days away, and I’m super hyped to see all of the hot scoops on gaming’s latest and greatest. Nintendo is set to show off a brand new console, Sony is going to reveal more about the NGP, and Microsoft…well, they must have something ready, right?

Let’s Talk About Duke Nukem Forever

I remember first reading about Duke Nukem Forever in EGM magazine back in 1997. That feels like it was a lifetime ago for me. While this game was going through development hell, I hit puberty, graduated college on two separate occasions and have worked six different jobs before settling into a stable position in the digital advertising industry. It’s crazy to me to think that 14 years later, this game has officially gone gold and is supposedly coming out in a matter of days.

Rapture Special: Pro-Tips from Video Games on How to Survive the May 21, 2011 Apocalypse

If you’re reading this, then the supposed Rapture scheduled for May 21, 2011, has not ended the world as we know it. That, or it’s happening as you read this and you really should be doing something other than reading this post, like trying to live or accepting your fate.

The apocalypse has been subject matter in video games for about as long as video games has existed as a medium. I bet you can’t count the number of times you’ve saved the world, tried to save the world, or tried to survive in a world that has already been ravaged by the apocalypse. Let’s take a look at some of those games and see if these games can prepare us for the real-life Rapture…if it isn’t already too late.

Eyes-On: Portal 2

Last week, my brother picked up a copy of Portal 2. He loved the original and picked up a copy of the sequel on day one. I however, am not afraid to admit that I don’t get Portal. Not that I don’t understand why it’s cool, but I simply don’t have the mental fortitude to play this game. My handful of attempts to play this game left me bewildered, as I never could grasp the gameplay systems strongly enough to actually understand what I’m doing. To be honest, I even have a hard time just watching my brother play the game, because I can’t come to grips with the logic behind his actions.

Having just finished watching my brother play Portal 2, I don’t think my confusion is going to change anytime soon.

Early Impressions of God of War II

Even though I was many years late to the party, once I started playing the first God of War, I finished it in relatively short order. That first God of War game was pretty awesome and I was excited to jump into God of War II. However, I thought it would be best for me to take a break from the series and take care of some other games before I jump back into it.

Though I’ve been picking at God of War II for at least a month now, I don’t have much to show for my time. I’m not very far into it, but I’m already considering skipping it for God of War III. What’s happening?

Dead Island Trailer

I normally don’t write about game trailers. The majority of the time, they’re simply CG sizzle reels that don’t show you any gameplay. As a knowledgeable (and sometimes jaded) gamer, I know better than to put a lot of weight into a video game trailer with no gameplay.

The Dead Island trailer, which doesn’t feature any gameplay, may very well just be another mediocre zombie game along the lines of Left 4 Dead. However, I can’t deny the fact that the trailer pulled at my heart strings in a way no video game trailer has done before. Click through to see it for yourself.

About Those Daily Posts…

When it comes to blogging, the key to success is consistency. The vast majority of blogs fail because their authors either post too inconsistently and/or abandon their blog completely. For the past few months, I’ve worked really hard to update this blog on a daily basis. Keeping up this pace has helped grow the reach of In Third Person from a few hundred visits a month to a few thousand.

For those of you that have come to expect a post from me every day, I may have some bad news for you.

Early Impressions of NHL 11

It’s been over a decade since I’ve played a console hockey game. I’m not into the sport enough to keep up with the yearly releases, but I still have fond memories of playing NHL 94 and Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey. Coming into NHL 11, I was understandably intimidated. Video game hockey has evolved quite a bit, which makes jumping in with my primitive video game hockey skills scary.
