Unusual Pick-Up: NBA 2K18

Buying an iteration of a sports game just before the new one comes out is generally a bad idea. Yes, it’s cheaper, but you miss out on all of the latest features and roster updates. However, I did not just buy NBA 2K18 on the Switch for gameplay reasons. I bought it for Demar Derozan.

Lumines Remastered Review

I missed Lumines in its 2004 heyday. While I have since grown up to embrace a platform-agnostic lifestyle, this game came out during a time when I was a fierce Nintendo loyalist and wanted nothing to do with anything associated with the PlayStation brand. So much so, that I actually got a PSP for free and sold it a few days later before even opening the box. Despite seeming to be a game right up my alley, this was caught squarely in the crosshairs of my overzealous fandom.

Fast forward to 2018 and Lumines finally makes its way to a Nintendo console, among other platforms to receive Lumines Remastered. Not to say that I wouldn’t have played it on something else, but the Switch seems like a great place to play this specific game due to its pick-up-and play nature and how well it could work as a portable experience. Does this blast from the past still shine in modern times?

Dead or Alive 6 and its Fight for Legitimacy

A few years back, I bought Dead or Alive 5 almost on a lark. It was part of an EB Games one-day-only sale for an incredibly low price and my curiousity got the best of me. As a fighting game enthusiast, I figured a few bucks here could at least give me a base knowledge of what the franchise was about, beyond the obvious fan service factor. To my surprise, I found a quality fighting game underneath the scantily-clad characters and exaggerated…physics. Though I didn’t stick with the game for too long, I came away from it far more enthused about its gameplay than its saucy presentation.

Had I not run into that deal-of-the-day with money to burn, I probably would still be a stranger to the franchise, as the stigma around its provocative presentation has been a deterrent for me. I imagine many others feel the same way. However, with the recent announcement of Dead or Alive 6 at E3 2018, it looks like Koei Tecmo wants to change that.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon Review

My fandom for Castlevania is a relatively recent phenomenon. Despite having played a few games in the series over the course of my lifetime, none of them really clicked with me until I spent an extended period of time with the original game on the NES Classic. While this epiphany occurred well after the Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Kickstarter ended, I jumped in just in time for Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon.

Out Now: Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection is here! Available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, you can 12 versions of the iconic series on a modern platform. If you pre-ordered the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions, you’ll also get a download code for Ultra Street Fighter IV, essentially giving you the entire series save for the latest game. Switch owners sadly won’t get Ultra Street Fighter IV, but they will get an exclusive tournament mode that could be cool with friends and extra consoles.

BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle threw a monkey wrench in my plans to grab this on day 1, but I do plan on grabbing this sooner rather than later!

Excited for NBA Playgrounds 2?

I really wanted to like the first NBA Playgrounds.

Appearing to be a spiritual successor to NBA Jam with a dash of NBA Street for good measure, NBA Playgrounds should have been a slam dunk. Instead, it stumbled horribly out of the gate with wonky shooting mechanics, a barebones single player experience, bad AI, a reliance on loot boxes to unlock players, and specifically for Nintendo Switch owners, no online play for the first few months of its release. Even though Saber Interactive gone a long way towards writing the wrongs of their base product, I still have a very sour taste in my mouth from that first experience.

Despite a lukewarm reception from myself and other online critics, the game sold well and the sequel is just around the corner. Is there anything in this new game to change my mind?
