The Shoe Fits, But…

A few weeks ago, my friend Jascha and I were went on a multi-hour Overwatch binge. New to the game, Jascha bounced around from one character to the next, hoping to find a character to invest in. At first, he struggled mightily with high-learning curve characters like McCree and Widowmaker. Then he moved onto Symmetra and Tracer, where he started to show some positive gains. Despite his initial success with those characters, he stubbornly went back to McCree and Widowmaker, failing now just as he did before.

Piquing my interest with this curious decision, I asked him why he went away from characters that were working for him. While I don’t remember his exact response, it was clear to me that it was going to take more than being good for him to stick with a character.

Observations Regarding the Streaming Experience

It’s been a bit over a year since I began this journey into the world of live streaming. It has been a very bumpy road filled with technical hiccups, dead air, and a strong sense of doubt for whether I should even pursue this avenue at all. However, the lessons I’ve learned throughout this process has helped improve my output while better setting myself up for the future. Also hoping to have entertained you along the way! Here are a few things I’ve noted during my time as a streamer that maybe could be of value to you.

In Third Person is Streaming for Extra Life!

As of last night, select streams will be in service of Extra Life. Best known as an annual 24-hour gaming marathon – taking place this year on Saturday, November 3rd – I will be collecting donations through my streams leading up to the big day. And yes, my friends, family, and I will be broadcasting a 24-hour gaming marathon of our own on twitch.tv/inthirdperson!

100% of the proceeds go to the Children’s Miracle Network of Hospitals, who provide 32 million treatments to children each year in the United States and Canada. I generally donate to my local Sick Kids Hospital when I can, but this is an opportunity to use this platform to help raise awareness and provide resources for children that need it most on a scale that I can’t reach alone.

Let’s work together on this! When you get a chance, please make a donation to Extra Life. I’ll do my part in raising awareness through the stream, continuing tonight with the latest episode of Boss Rush! I hope we all have a great time gaming for a cause right up to the big 24-hour gaming marathon and beyond!

Favourite Mario Spin-Offs featuring Double Jump

From plumber, to multi-sport athlete, to doctor, Mario has done much more throughout his illustrious career than save the Mushroom Kingdom from the clutches of Bowser. These side hustles of his are documented in dozens – if not hundreds – of spin-off games. Some of these are best left forgotten, but many of them are great and some are arguably more popular than the mainline series of Super Mario games.

With me to discuss some of our favourite Mario spin-off games are Kris and Rachel from Double Jump!

Retro Game Collecting in the Margins

Inspired by reclaiming a bunch of my old retro games from my parents’ house, I decided to dip my toe back into the world of retro game collecting. While I never had any motivations to build a massive library filled with complete collections of games, I did have a very specific criteria in mind so that I don’t fall down the rabbit hole. So far, the process of collecting has moved rather slowly.

Expectations for Streaming and Other Lofty Goals

A thread on r/twitch garnered a lot of momentum and caught my eye a little while back. Titled “It is ok to give up.“, u/LostLibrary details the story of his friend who has ruined his life in hopes of chasing his dream to become a streaming superstar. Giving up on work and school, yet not being able to get his streaming venture off the ground, has put his friend in a really tight spot. He now finds himself homeless, living with his friend while working a fast food job in an attempt to get his life back on track.

I’m sure his story isn’t the first of its kind and certainly won’t be the last. Reading the thread got me thinking about my expectations for streaming, for In Third Person as a whole, and the concept of expectations relative to chasing lofty goals.
