Curiosity – What’s Inside the Cube?

(Download on iTunes)

From his crazy over-selling of ideas that never made it into the Fable games, to the early Kinect prototype Milo, Peter Molyneux isn’t afraid to make kooky ideas come to life (or at least talk about them). His latest effort may be his most offbeat yet. In Curiosity – What’s Inside the Box, you and the rest of the world  work together to chip away at a giant cube until there’s nothing left. There’s supposedly something life-changing at the end, but only the person who chips away the final piece will get to see it. For at least a few minutes, I rolled up my sleeves and chipped away with the rest of the world in this experience.

The Recurring Bosscast: 002 – PlayPlace Smell

With Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops II out, we figured now would be the perfect time to cover our collective disinterest in both. To balance things out, Jett interviews his coworker David (aka DG Omega), who is the biggest Halo fan he knows. Besides being too cool for school, Mat fills us in on Skyfall, Jason is nervous about losing his wisdom teeth, and we cover a ton of different games we’ve been playing instead of the big two.

Jason – Downstab
Mat – Biff Bam Pop

Check Out My Borderlands Legends Review on Splitkick.com!

As a fan of the Borderlands franchise, I jumped into this iOS spin-off with both feet. To my dismay, Legends falls well short of the standards set by its console and PC brethren. If that last sentence isn’t enough to ward you off from spending your hard-earned money on this mediocre action strategy title, check out my full review on Splitkick.

Early Impressions of Assassin’s Creed III

Will the real sequel to Assassin’s Creed II please stand up?

As much as I enjoyed Brotherhood (and despised Revelations), they are essentially Champion Edition and Turbo sequels. Their innovations were minimal and their overall impact to the bigger story was inconsequential. Case in point, the start of Assassin’s Creed III make virtually zero reference to Ezio’s later adventures.

Now that ACIII is here, is it the leap forward we’ve been hoping for all along?

Off-Topic: The Return of Vince Carter in Toronto?

The breakup between Vince Carter and the Toronto Raptors is one of the messiest in Toronto sports history. A man that was once the king of Canadian sports turned his back on all of us. He whined. He demanded to be traded. He even gave up on the court and cost us wins for his own selfish reasons. Since he was traded in 2004, the city of Toronto has targeted him as public enemy #1. To this day, he’s still booed mercilessly every time he’s in town.

Recently, Vince Carter stated in an interview with a Toronto radio station that he’d be open to coming back to the city where it all started. Is the city of Toronto ready to take him back? Would I be ready to?

Wreck-It Ralph Micro Review

Saw Wreck-It Ralph when it came out and thought it was great. Beyond the cameos from real video game characters, it’s a movie that lives up to Disney standards. Whether you’re a kid or adult, there’s a lot to enjoy here; especially if you’re a fan of video games. With that said, I think there were opportunities to be even better that it doesn’t capitalize on. I think that it could have handled some of the main conflicts a bit better and pull the heart strings a bit more, but it doesn’t stop the overall experience from being a pleasure. This is one of the safest recommendations I can make to virtually any moviegoer.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Review

In the year 2027, cybernetics are challenging the definition of humanity. On one cybernetmic hand, there are powerful corporations who want nothing more than to profit from the sales of such augmentations. On the other fleshy hand, the idea of humans turning into any form of robot rubs some people the wrong way. You, as the new security director at a biotechnology firm, find yourself embroiled in a war over this, as an initial attack on your company almost takes your life. Now outfitted with augmentations – a necessity after the damage done to your body – your search for answers uncovers a plot far grander  than a one-off terrorist strike.

Off-Topic: Rock The Vote

Today is a monumental day in U.S. – and no, I’m not talking about Halo 4. Today is the day to vote for who you feel is most deserving to be your president for the next four years.

Regardless of who you support, I’m hoping you take advantage of your right to vote today. As a Canadian, I’m not eligible, but I urge all of you that are to make your vote count!

Game Design Talk: Being Exposed in Stealth-Based Games

Not too long ago, I played Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay for the first time. I was really digging its first-person stealth action in theory, but the experience fell apart for me very quickly. I got to a point early on where Riddick had to fight his enemies in a head-on manner and it just did not work out well for me. Even when I lowered the difficulty to easy, I kept getting smoked by the computer. It seemed like when I was forced to defend myself in a non-stealthy way, Riddick was seemingly useless.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not good at stealth games. But I think there’s something to be said about the way stealth is implemented in games, particularly when a player has to fight outside the context of stealth.
