Troubleshooting Rendering Lag and Encoder Lag in Your Twitch, Mixer, or YouTube Live Streams

Of all the calamities that can occur on stream, lag is one of the most common and most annoying to wrestle with. There are many potential reasons for why lag occurs, all of which require different sets of solutions.

In the last installment, I covered how to troubleshoot network lag. Now let’s cover rendering and encoder lag. Unlike network lag, dropped frames caused by either rendering lag or encoding lag are tied to your PC’s performance. Here are some pointers for reducing the strain on your PC and maintain a smooth presentation!

Streaming and My Lip Sync Battle Part 2

Remember that time when I told you that I finally figured out what the problem was on my stream? And that I knew how to fix it? Yeah, I was wrong about that last part.

Streaming and My Lip Sync Battle

Having pushed my existing streaming setup to the limit, I decided to take the next step by purchasing a graphics card. Doing so would ease the burden on my CPU and ideally allow me to stream higher quality video without my computer melting. At first, it seemed like it was working just fine. But then, a more nefarious issue began happening that has been racking my brain and wrecking my streams for the past month.

Mortal Kombat X is Getting Enhanced Online Netplay

Recently, NetherRealm Studios announced that Mortal Kombat X was getting updated with GGPO-style rollback netcode. This is a huge win for the game and its fans, as the dynamic latency model currently used leads to a less-than-ideal online combat kombat experience. As far as I know, a complete overhaul of a game’s netcode this long after launch, at least in a fighting game, is unprecedented.

Ultra Suck Fighter IV: PlayStation 4 Edition

In its current state, Ultra Street Fighter IV on the PlayStation 4 sucks. I personally haven’t run into the more egregious stuff that some people have reported, but what I have seen is inexcusable. Sluggish menus. Online UI all out of place so that usernames cut off. Audio out of sync or cutting off. Decapre’s Scramble move running at a slower speed and traveling a shorter distance. Worst of all is the input lag. For a system with this level of horsepower, it’s inexcusable that it actually runs worse than both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. Three frames may not sound like a lot, but when many combos have timing windows that are 1 or 2 frames, it’s actually really hard to adjust if you’ve played this game elsewhere.

All things considered, the current state of Ultra Street Fighter IV on PlayStation 4 is baffling. This is pretty much worse in every way compared to its last gen brethren. Capcom, Sony and Other Ocean should be embarrassed for letting this half-baked port of an old game out the door in this condition. Until this is patched to fix all of these issues, don’t buy this.

Super Street Fighter IV and Online Play

For the longest time, I used to wonder why pro Street Fighter IV players would bash online play so much. It seemed like every single one of them would complain about how the game doesn’t play the same online as it does locally. As an amateur player who had spent the majority of Street Fighter IV time online, I thought it worked fine. Sure, there were instances where the game would clearly slow to a crawl, but I thought that I could play this game online the same way I would locally.

However, I’ve gotten a lot better in the last few months, and I’m really starting to see what many of the pro players were complaining about. As I’m learning new techniques, combos and tactics, I’m finding more and more that they don’t consistently work online, even with a great connection.
