The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Initial Impressions

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past will forever be one of the best Zelda games of all-time and one of the overall greatest of all-time. But it also had some unforeseeable side-effects to the series going forward. Primarily, the rigid dungeon structure of A Link to the Past became the formula for the franchise for decades to come. A great formula, but one that has gotten stale over time and one that strayed away from the open-ended nature of the original.

Nintendo sort of took a stab at breaking the cycle with A Link Between Worlds, where weapons and items could be rented out or bought at any time. This time, they’ve gone even further, crafting an experience that’s almost entirely open-ended. How did they do it? And does it make for a better game?

Rapture Special: Pro-Tips from Video Games on How to Survive the May 21, 2011 Apocalypse

If you’re reading this, then the supposed Rapture scheduled for May 21, 2011, has not ended the world as we know it. That, or it’s happening as you read this and you really should be doing something other than reading this post, like trying to live or accepting your fate.

The apocalypse has been subject matter in video games for about as long as video games has existed as a medium. I bet you can’t count the number of times you’ve saved the world, tried to save the world, or tried to survive in a world that has already been ravaged by the apocalypse. Let’s take a look at some of those games and see if these games can prepare us for the real-life Rapture…if it isn’t already too late.

Early 3D Dot Game Heroes Impressions

It should only take an instant for a gamer seeing this for the first time to recognize the influence behind 3D Dot Game Heroes. For better or worse, this game is a 3D version of the original Legend of Zelda with elements of A Link to the Past mixed in, pixels and all. As a fan of the Zelda series, watching the trailer for 3D Dot Game Heroes was the moment that made me say, “I want a Playstation 3.”

Ocarina of Time: Timeless

1998 was a monumental year for gaming. Metal Gear Solid rocked the faces of Playstation One owners, while Half-Life revolutionized first-person shooters and the single-player experience on the PC. I’m sure there are other examples of gaming brilliance I can discuss, but the one I want to talk about here may be the most important game to come out of 1998. It played a major role in revolutionizing 3D gaming and to many, still stands as the gold standard of this entire medium.

I’m not here to debate its place in the pantheon of video games. What I am here to say is, the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time left an impact on me in 1998 that I still feel today.
