Unlocking More Characters and Fighting Online in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate!

Unlocking characters is a real struggle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate! Though I lose to a few on the stream, I would end up unlocking a bunch more through a series of Classic mode plays. I also take part in an extended set of matches with long-time viewer Muligoon! GG!

I Want to Main Ryu in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate But…

Coming into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with a background in traditional fighting games has been quite the challenge. There are so many differences in the way that Smash plays compared to other fighting games that my mind and my hands have really struggled to translate my skills to this game. On paper, it seems like Ryu would be the perfect fit for me, as he retains most of his move set from the Street Fighter series. Without having to worry about what moves I’m pulling off or how to use them most effectively, I could just play and let my instincts do the rest.

Now that I’ve had a few days to play it, that isn’t the case at all. If anything, he’s actually one of the harder characters to play due to the way he controls.

My Struggle with Smash Bros.

I used to love playing the Smash Bros. series of games. However, a long hiatus and a developed skill-set in traditional fighting games really warped my approach to Smash to the point where I struggle to play it and enjoy it at any level. Will be picking up Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in December though, so maybe that one will be the game that gets me back on the wagon!

The End of My Amiibo Hype Train?

Amiibo CollectionOver year has passed and way too much money has left my wallet for Amiibo figures. Though they don’t spend much time being scanned into my Wii U, they make for amazing collectibles on my gaming desk. Looking at my desk, I feel like I got every character I’d want – and a handful I probably didn’t need.

With Nintendo not slowing down on their Amiibo releases, what more could they have in store? I kind have at least one of everyone I want. In some cases, more than one of each character I want. Is this the year where my Amiibo spending finally goes down?

Universal Fighting Game Guide: Option Selects

dragon-ball-fighterz-pros

Have you ever fought someone that seemed like they were psychic? Someone that seemed to have a counter for your next move the instant you did it? Some players may just have a read on you. Others might have been really good guessers. Or, in very specific circumstances, they may have leveraged an option select to improve their odds of success. In this edition of the Universal Fighting Game Guide, we talk about the concept of option selects. This is probably the most advanced concept in all of fighting games, though I’ll try my best to break it down and simplify things. Continue reading

Amiibo Story: Bowser

Bowser AmiiboIn a weird way, Bowser has been my life long video game arch nemesis. Since the original Super Mario Bros. was the game that got me into video games years before I was even old enough to go to school, I’ve been battling the King Koopa for as long as I can remember. Nowadays, I usually give him the boot with relative ease, though things certainly weren’t in my favour back then.

Super Smash Bros for Wii U Review

My memories of playing Smash Bros. prior to the Wii U version are hazy at best. I remember having a great time with the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube iterations, though I went cold turkey once Brawl came out. Not to say that the Wii game did anything wrong per se, but I just had my fill of Smash Bros. at that point. With many years of recharging under my belt, now isn’t a bad time to come back.
