How I Left Left 4 Dead 2…4 Dead

Last time I wrote about Left 4 Dead 2, I had some very nice things to say about it. Since then, I’ve played it only once or twice. While I still stand by the belief that Left 4 Dead 2 is a good game, I don’t really have any motivation to go back any time soon.

Two things happened that made me fall off the Left 4 Dead 2 hype train: I’ve grown tired of the L4D formula and I’ve gotten a number of other games that have offered a fresher experience to me.

When the original Left 4 Dead came out, I had never played anything like it before. My brother played the hell out of that game. Those characters, special infected and scenarios became iconic. Eventually, I grew tired of it and was excited to see what Left 4 Dead 2 had to offer. While Left 4 Dead 2 does add a lot to spice things up, it’s still Left 4 Dead at it’s core, which I’m pretty much done with at this point.

The other reason I dropped it relatively quickly is that it came out around the time I got a bunch of games that were fresh experiences to me. I tore through Assassin’s Creed 2, Borderlands and Liberty City Stories, and still have a long way to go in Modern Warfare 2. And now I’m at a point where I’m currently playing other stuff and can’t really fit Left 4 Dead 2 back in the queue.

If you’re still enjoying the zombie apocalypse, power to you. For now, I’ll spend my gaming time elsewhere.

Pick Up Post: This Treasure Better Be Worth It

On Saturday, I took a visit to one of my favourite independent video game retailers with my girlfriend because we just happened to be in the area. After circling around the store and trying out Blazblue on the PSP, a game in the bargain bin caught my eye, which I immediately picked up.

Mass Effect 2: Electric Bugaloo

Hot off the heels of Mass Effect, I was quick to play the sequel. While I thought the first Mass Effect was an incredible experience, it also had some quirks to it that could really turn someone off. I haven’t been able to put down Mass Effect 2; stopping about 3/4 of the way through the game to write this down. If I didn’t feel compelled to gush about Mass Effect 2 to the world, I would just keep playing. Mass Effect 2 might possibly be the best game ever. I have played a lot of games in my life, and I’m hard pressed to think of many more examples of gaming brilliance.

Game Design Talk: Burnout Paradise and the Feeling of Progression

For a game that is fairly one-dimensional at its core, Burnout Paradise does a lot of little things to motivate players to keep playing. You will unlock new cars by either winning races or taking them out as they randomly drive by you on the road. The game keeps track of all the super jumps you complete, fences you smash and billboards you drive through. You can even race for the best time on basically every street in the game against your friends or against the world.

Those little things have kept me playing this game longer than I usually plan to. However, each of my sessions usually ends when I realize how far away I am to making progress in the most important measure of progression in the game: the licenses.

Closing Thoughts on Prince of Persia (2008)

For the last few days, I have dedicated all of my gaming resources towards the Prince of Persia reboot. My first session with it made enough of an impact on me to drop everything else I was playing and play through this to the end. I don’t know why people hate on this game so much because I enjoyed it all the way through. Granted, it has flaws, but was definitely worth my time.

Where the Grass is Green and the Girls Are Pretty

Burnout Paradise was a game I’ve had on my radar for quite some time. The series first caught my eye when I played the Burnout Revenge demo that came with my XBOX 360, which came with a really cool take down mode. However, the demo for Burnout Paradise left me skeptical. The sensation of going fast was intact, as well as the joy of wrecking other cars (as well as your own), but the demo didn’t really give me a sense of how the open-world structure of the game would work.

I may be two years too late, and the developers have added a ton of free and paid additional content to the game since I last tried it, but I recently got a copy of Burnout Paradise at the bargain basement price of $5 at a Blockbuster Video sale. Was this ticket to paradise well worth it?

I Play Just Dance and See Why It’s So Divisive

Hope you had a great Easter weekend. For me, it was a great opportunity to spend some time with my family as well as my girlfriend’s family. As far as gaming goes, most of it went down at my girlfriend’s house, where my girlfriend, her sister, her sister’s boyfriend and I played a bunch of Wii games. We played a bunch of games, including the Beatles: Rock Band, Rock Band Track Pack Volume 2, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 (which was really fun) and we beat New Super Mario Bros. Wii (which was epic, because we stayed up till 3am on Sunday night to beat it).

The one game I wanted to talk about today though was Just Dance. My girlfriend and her sister had been extremely excited to buy this game and finally picked it up over the weekend. Just Dance is the hottest new game on Wii, having sold over 2 million copies worldwide and garnering rave reviews from customers. However, the gaming press and core gamers have slammed Just Dance hard, claiming that it’s a half-baked product that doesn’t even work.

Now that I’ve played it, I see where both sides are coming from.

The Fresh Prince

The Prince of Persia series, up until this point, has been a series I have stayed well clear of. Prior to my recent purchase, the only Prince of Persia game I had ever played was the NES port of the original. I only got to play While I thought it looked great and the animations were surprisingly fluid and the concept behind the game was cool, I absolutely hated the controls. I couldn’t get a feel for the momentum behind the character, which lead to continuous drops into spikes.

Since then, the series was rebooted with Prince of Persia: Sands of Time on Playstation 2, XBOX and Gamecube. That series eventually faded and Ubisoft tried to spice things up with the simply-titled Prince of Persia. To separate itself from its predecessors, this reboot made some drastic changes to its approach on graphics and gameplay. While the game was well received critically, it did not meet the sales expectations many companies were hoping for. Things apparently went so bad that the latest Prince of Persia games are going back to the Sands of Time style, which in effect reboots the reboot.

Some Things I Don’t Like About Mass Effect

Having just finished playing through Mass Effect, I think this is one of the greatest video games I’ve ever played. When I played through that game, it is startling how big this game is, yet how awesome the experience is. When it comes to storytelling, scale, characterization and role-playing, I don’t think I’ve played anything better than Mass Effect.

Game Design Talk: Turning the Difficulty Up To 11

I’ve been putting a lot of time into Street Fighter IV for the iPhone and I’m still having a lot of fun with it. I’ve gotten to the point where I can consistently hit 19-hit combos with Ryu, which is kind of scary, considering the fact that I can’t do that on the real thing.

Thinking I had mad skills, I decided to try playing the game at the toughest difficulty setting. On normal, I could beat the game with Ryu in under 8 minutes. On “Grueling”, it took me 25 minutes to get to the final boss. It was tough, but I didn’t mind the experience. It still felt somewhat fair.

It was when I got to M. Bison that the experience took a turn for the worst. If you’ve played a Street Fighter game, you probably can empathize with my pain. I spent another 30 minutes just trying to beat him before I finally broke through.
