Board Game Pick-Up Post: July 2016 Edition

Sushi Go Party Animal Upon Animal Kittens in a Blender2016 has been a quiet year for board game shopping in our household, at least relative to years past. Part of that I feel is from a sense that we’ve largely caught up on past games that we’ve missed and now it’s mostly a matter of looking forward to upcoming new releases. Then there’s also the matter of our wedding, which did push the board games aside for a bit while we planned our nuptials.

So with life finally starting to settle down again, we took a trip to our friendly local game store. Two of the games we got were proven hits that we’ve played in the past. One is a hot new release that’s also a sequel to one of our faves.

My Experience at Red Bull Fight for the 6ix

Fight for the 6ix is a series of tournaments taking place in Toronto, Canada. After all four events are over, the top scoring player will get to compete with 15 others from across North America for a spot at the Capcom Cup finals. As much as I would like to earn the right to fight against the likes of Infiltration and Tokido for hundreds of thousands of dollars, but getting #1 in one of the toughest Street Fighter regions in Canada is easier said than done.

Instead, my goal is for this event was to validate the work I’ve done since the Cineplex Canadian Championships. In that sense, did I achieve my goal?

The End of My Amiibo Hype Train?

Amiibo CollectionOver year has passed and way too much money has left my wallet for Amiibo figures. Though they don’t spend much time being scanned into my Wii U, they make for amazing collectibles on my gaming desk. Looking at my desk, I feel like I got every character I’d want – and a handful I probably didn’t need.

With Nintendo not slowing down on their Amiibo releases, what more could they have in store? I kind have at least one of everyone I want. In some cases, more than one of each character I want. Is this the year where my Amiibo spending finally goes down?

Kickstart Guide to Street Fighter V

Street Fighter V is poised to be one of the fiercest video game battlegrounds for many years to come. With many players having cut their teeth on the beta leading up to the game’s release, the level of competition at the time of the game’s release was already high. If you just brought the game home, don’t be surprised if you get repeatedly trounced by online competition.

While there is an inherent learning curve to anything, you don’t have to suck at Street Fighter V forever. If you train smart, you can improve at a rate that will keep you engaged for the long haul. Out Now – Fire Emblem: Fates

Lost amidst all of my Street Fighter V hoopla is the fact that Fire Emblem: Fates is out today. This time, we’re getting two different games at once; one covering each side of the conflict. As part of Amazon Canada’s E3 sale last year, I’m getting 30% off the Birthright edition. However, you better believe I’ll eventually have Conquest and the 3rd DLC campaign as well. Between this and Street Fighter V, it’s been a wonderful week as a gamer!
