Codenames Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

CodenamesCodenames is part Guess Who?, part Battleship, and way more awesome than those two games could ever hope to be. Working in teams, players will take turns deciphering their spymaster’s clues in order to correctly identify their fellow spies in the field. Guess wrong and you might identify an enemy spy, or worse yet, an assassin that will immediately end the game, causing your whole team to lose.

Playing as an operative, it’s a blast to try and guess the names based on clues that might be amazing or horrible from your spymaster. Being the spymaster takes the experience to another level, as it really takes some thought to craft one-word clues that apply to multiple names. Besides being a fantastic game in both roles, the game scales well to almost any player count beyond four, so it’s something that everyone at the party can (and will) enjoy. This one is fresh in my brain right now from having played a ton of it recently, but I really believe that this one is fantastic and one that will have staying power. Whatever you need to do to play Codenames, do it!

Super Mario Maker Design Diary: Tight Squeeze

Going into Super Mario Maker, did you have a plan? A grandiose level design idea that you scribbled in a notebook as a child that been patiently waiting to burst off of the page and into the game? Can’t say I did. After completing the tutorial, I found myself at a loss. What the heck do I do now?

Star Wars: Imperial Assault Skirmish Mode Impressions

Star Wars: Imperial AssaultIn a previous post, I covered the tutorial for Star Wars: Imperial Assault. To summarize, I thought that the core aspects of the game’s mechanics, as portrayed in the tutorial, already made for a thrilling tactical combat experience. Now it’s time to ratchet up the complexity with the Skirmish mode, which is one of the two main ways to play.

Street Fighter V Beta Impressions Part 4: Cammy

Cammy is one of the most popular characters in the Street Fighter roster. Part of that comes being an attractive character who inexplicably chooses to fight in a one-piece bathing suit. To each, their own, I guess. Outfit aside, she’s also been a fun character to play as, even in games where she wasn’t good.

That certainly wasn’t the case for her in Street Fighter IV. From instant divekicks, to dizzying Sako combos, to unblockable setups, Cammy was a top-tier monster for many years thanks to weapons that kind of went against the spirit of the game. It would ultimately take a core change to how all characters wake-up from a knockdown to cool her off just a touch. How do you now bring her into the Street Fighter V fold without nerfing the character into oblivion? Capcom has some interesting solutions that conundrum.

Thoughts on the Upcoming Release of Project X Zone 2

I wanted to like the original Project X Zone much more than I actually did. Rife with all of the characters I would expect from Capcom, Bandai Namco and Sega, and a thick serving of fan service, the actual experience of playing the game was hugely disappointing. Save for a flashy combat system that had a smidgen more depth than meets the eye, it was a piss poor attempt at a turn-based strategy game. Featuring a stupid story filled with anime cliches and gameplay that was completely devoid of strategy, this was nothing more than 40 hours of mercilessly smashing hapless baddies ad nauseam.

To my surprise, a sequel is in the works. To my disappointment, it seems as though little has been learned from the first game.
