Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle Review

When internal images and documents surrounding the marketing of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle leaked, I shuddered a little bit. From the core concept of mashing these two franchises together, to the corporate speak used to make the game sound cool, I had my concerns that this had disaster written all over it. Then E3 happened and perceptions changed again. Taking these two franchises and putting them in an XCOM-style turn-based strategy game made the product even weirder, though it also looked like it had potential to be something special.

In a year where Nintendo has continually surprised us, they, along with Ubisoft, surprise us yet again. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is a great game.

Quick Thoughts on the 30 Games Packed with the NES Classic

While we anxiously await for the release of the Nintendo Switch, we get a blast from the past this holiday season with the NES Classic. I would have bought one in a heartbeat, but it’s on my Christmas wish list. Hoping Santa comes through on this one!

To celebrate, I share some quick thoughts on each of the 30 games in the North American/PAL package. Click through for my thoughts!

Super Mario Maker Review

In the early 1980s, Nintendo designed the first Super Mario levels by hand with graph paper. Decades later, Nintendo released Super Mario Maker on the Wii U. With the use of the touchscreen on the Wii U Gamepad, players of all sorts can whip together a functional level within a matter of minutes. Is this the tool that puts Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto out of business?

Amiibo Story: Bowser

Bowser AmiiboIn a weird way, Bowser has been my life long video game arch nemesis. Since the original Super Mario Bros. was the game that got me into video games years before I was even old enough to go to school, I’ve been battling the King Koopa for as long as I can remember. Nowadays, I usually give him the boot with relative ease, though things certainly weren’t in my favour back then.

Amiibo Story: Mario

Mario AmiiboMario has been a part of my life for almost as long as I can remember. I vaguely remember playing Defender on a hand-me-down Atari 2600, but when I was just old enough to comprehend what video games were, it was when I was playing the original Super Mario Bros. with an NES controller in my hands. Much has changed since I first played a game with Mario in it, but he’s been with me all the way.

Amiibo Story: Rosalina

Rosalina is a fine character in the Super Mario universe. I’m not much of a fan of the first Super Mario Galaxy, but I liked her in that game. She was also fun to use in Super Mario 3D World as an unlockable character. My in-game memories with her are admittedly thin, but the chase for her Amiibo was probably the most interesting one yet.

An Open Letter to Santa

Dear Santa,

Let’s cut to the chase. You know I’ve been a good boy and you’re a generous guy. You know you want to leave me something nice under the Christmas tree, but I’m a terrible person to get gifts for. I have a bad habit of purchasing everything I want before anyone has a chance to give it to me.

It doesn’t have to be that difficult, especially with my help. If you click through to the rest of this post, I’ll give you a few suggestions.

Movember Special: Gaming’s Definitive Moustaches

I’m not sure if Movemeber is an international movement, but it’s a really big thing in North America. Many men (and maybe women, I’m not discriminating) are growing moustaches to raise awareness for prostate cancer. I am not growing a moustache, because I do not have the facial hair follicles to grow anything that looks halfway respectable, but I will definitely donate to the cause at some point.

As a way of raising awareness to the cause, I thought it’d be cool to highlight some of gaming’s most definitive moustaches. This is far from a complete list, so I’d love to see what moustaches you think deserve recognition!
