The Super Nintendo Essays: Happy Birthday

The Super Nintendo Essays is a series of posts detailing my history with and passion for the SNES. It had a profound effect on my life as a gamer, and I wanted to share some of my most memorable stories about it with you!

I remember the day when my Super NES hype hit a crescendo. For months, I pestered my parents about my desire to receive an SNES for my birthday. In response, they would usually troll me by saying they were going to get me a TurboGrafx-16 instead. As time went on, the jokes got a bit more intense, and one day, they broke me.

The Video Games I Played at Fan Expo 2017

Playing video games at any sort of large public convention is a tough proposition. Despite it being my favourite hobby, the pros of trying upcoming releases in a 10-minute demo is usually outweighed by having to wait hours in line for that privilege. As such, Thursday at Fan Expo is the best day to do it due to it being the day with the lightest attendance.

On day one of the show, I made a beeline for the video game booths and here’s what I played!

The Super Nintendo Essays: Playing With Super Power

The Super Nintendo Essays is a series of posts detailing my history with and passion for the SNES. It had a profound effect on my life as a gamer, and I wanted to share some of my most memorable stories about it with you!

When it comes to my history with video games, you can draw a very specific line on my birthday in 1994. The time before it was the era before I got a Super Nintendo. After that, is the era I still live in now, where owning a Super Nintendo changed my life. That era of gaming, and specifically my time with that console, transformed me into a kid who likes video games into a full-blown gaming enthusiast.

I vividly remember the moment I received that SNES from my parents and many of my gaming experiences after that. However, by that point, the console was almost two years old. What was I doing back then? And why am I struggling so hard to pull those memories of a time before the SNES out of my brain? Follow me as I ramble on in hopes of piecing together my life before owning an SNES.

Fan Expo Canada 2017 Recap

IMG_1393

As much as Fan Expo tries its best to provide attendees with wall-to-wall excitement, the likelihood of meeting everyone’s expectations in terms of personal taste is a tough order. This year was a year where that came to light for me. With a list of guests that didn’t appeal all that much, combined with a short shopping list, and I had my concerns that this would be a weak show. While it ended up being not as entertaining for me in years past, I did find enough to keep me entertained for the most part.

Late last night, I took an initial test drive of Menat in Street Fighter V. It remains to be seen how good she’ll be in the long run, but so far, she seems to have a ton of potential. That is, if you can come to grips with her myriad of intricacies.

Time to Take a Break from ARMS

I was so close. Like, thisclose.

My goal in ARMS is to hit rank 20. The highest rank in the game. After making a breakthrough in my play style, I got all the way up to rank 19 with just a few wins shy of 20. Then, it all fell apart.

A few internet issues caused the game to unfairly penalize me with rage quitting, combined with a ton of losses against stiff competition and my ranking has fallen off of a cliff.

After many losses and having thrown my controller more times than I can count, I think it’s time to take a break before I destroy my controller, my dignity, and my sanity.

Super NES Classic Pre-Orders Rolling Out Across North America and it’s Been a Mess

Remember when Nintendo said that they would be making significantly more Super NES Classic Edition consoles than its NES counterpart? Sure didn’t look like it during this first round of North American pre-orders. Starting as early as 1am EST with Best Buy in the United States, pre-orders began rolling out and selling out just as fast as they arrived. Heck, during my attempt to snag one, it sold out in two minutes. You do not have to search that far on the internet to find many bitter customers who came up short when trying to snag Nintendo’s latest retro console.
