Out Now: Splatoon

My skepticism around Nintendo’s oddball foray into the team-based shooter melted away after experiencing the global testfire a few weeks ago. While I still have questions about how much content is in the package, I’m smitten by the game’s look, sound, innovative gameplay and polish. Splatoon may not seem like a Nintendo game at first glance, but it playing that beta proved to me that this has the big N’s fingerprints all over it.

I’m going to have to wait a bit before I get my hands covered in ink. Having ordered through Amazon, it appears as though my copy won’t be in until sometime next week. When it does come in though, expect a review and some video content from me in the near future! Happy inking!

Pikmin 3 Review

Under Pikmin 3‘s cuddly veneer is a game that is unapologetically hardcore. Standing between your crew and a return trip home is a few key parts to rebuild your ship, the treacherous inhabitants of PNF-404, and the inescapable hand of father time. At first, my poor play and the fear of the consequences that came with that poor play nearly drove me to dropping the game completely. However, after coming to grips with managing my troops and the limited time allotted per day, the stress of survival took a back seat to the joy of exploring this beautiful world with my cute little Pikmin along for the ride.

2011: A Year Nintendo and it’s Fans Would Prefer to Forget

As Microsoft, Sony, and to an extent, Apple, went on their merry way in 2011 with their gaming ventures, it seemed like Nintendo sputtered all the way through. As a lifelong Nintendo fanboy and a Nintendo-only console owner up until this generation, it’s tough seeing what Nintendo has done (and not done) in 2011. If you’re a Nintendo-only household and you’re as hardcore into gaming as I am, I feel your pain.

Let’s look at Nintendo’s fronts, discussed what went wrong and their outlook going into 2012.

Advance Wars: If Only Real War Was This Fun

A lot of people tend to gloss over the fact that Nintendo does more than just Mario, Zelda and Metroid. If you look far enough into their catalogue, you’ll find a number of different games and franchises that span almost every genre. Some of these games maintain cult followings and steady sales, such as Fire Emblem and Kirby, while others fall by the wayside with only a few people caring that it likely won’t come back (unfortunately, I’m looking at you, Elite Beat Agents).

Though Advance Wars made its North American debut in the early 2000s, the series originated in the late 80s in Japan. Why did it take so long to make it to North America? I don’t know. But I can tell you that when it did, it blew my mind.

How Rambo Ruined My Childhood*

*The post title may be exaggerating, a bit.

Rambo on the original Nintendo is a game I fondly remember for all the wrong reasons. Back when I was no more than 8 years old, I rented this at my local video store. It was the worst video game I’ve ever rented.

Some Love for Air Fortress

To most people, Air Fortress is a game they’ve never heard of. According to the Wikipedia page for the game (so the validity of this fact is questionable), only 385 copies of the game came out in the US. In any case, this is not a game anyone will mention, ever. This is a shame to me, because I think it’s a pretty awesome 8-bit action game. The game also has a strong sentimental value with me, but first, let me explain what the game was about if you’ve never heard of it. I’ve included a video below as well to further explain.

An Incomplete Space Odyssey

The Metroid series of games have carved out a weird niche in my memories. I’ve always felt that the games were really cool and I’ve always wanted to play them through to completion, but I never do. In many cases, I never get far at all.

Mike Tyson Ate My Children

punchout333

Mike Tyson is famous for a lot of things. On top of being one of the greatest boxers of all-time, he’s also a legendary last boss in the world of video games. He’s so brutally hard, that Nintendo freely gave away the code to skip directly to Mike Tyson, if you dared. You may think, “Oh man! I can skip to the end; this will be a cake walk!” but then Iron Mike hits you with a lightning-quick punch you didn’t see and you instantly hit the canvas. It’s then you realize, you’re screwed.

Me vs. Popular Opinion

A few weeks ago, after putting up with hearing me talk about Metacritic, website reviews and podcast discussion about new games, my girlfriend said something that took me aback.

“You put a lot of stake in other people’s opinions when it comes to games.”

While I do feel that my opinion ultimately comes first, yes, I do put a lot of stake in the opinions of others when it comes to games. I think ever since Famitsu began running reviews in the late 80s, public opinion has been a huge part of video game culture. For a hobby as expensive as this one, it’s no wonder that gamers have looked for second opinions before making very expensive purchases.

With the release of Super Mario Galaxy 2, I find myself a bit conflicted as my personal opinion of the first game makes me reluctant to sip the Galaxy 2 Kool-Aid.

When Die Hard Fans Go Wrong

I normally pay no mind to video game related petitions. They’re usually stupid demands made by and supported by equally stupid gamers. But I couldn’t help but discuss this recent petition related to Sonic 4. To be fair, not everyone in the petition is in support of it, and some people are there just to make fun of them like I’m about to.
