I have nothing to contribute to the Batman: Arkham City discussion at this point in time other than I have a copy of it in front of me and am waiting to play it right after my brother is done with the Dance Central 2 demo.
For sure I’ll be playing the heck out of this one in the next few days, as I’m sure many of you will be too. I’ll need a bit of time to get through it, but for sure let’s talk about Batman: Arkham City in the near future!
When it comes to fighting games, there’s nothing more exciting, intense or as important as the fighting game tournament. This is the place where fighting game players who take their games seriously strut their stuff in hopes of winning the big prize, and more importantly, earning the respect of their fellow fighting game playing peers. You can say what you want about how you scrape your friends all the time at your place, or how you’re a legend at your local arcade, or how you’re one of the top ranked players online, but in the new era of fighting games, it’s all about showing and proving at a tournament, especially one that’s being live streamed for viewers around the world to check out.
Though I’m far from a seasoned tournament veteran, I’m still very much feeling the buzz from my time at T12: Toronto Fighting Game Championships, which is the inspiration for today’s post. I think I’ve had enough tournament experience (and have heard enough second-hand accounts) to give you a few words of wisdom if you plan on going to a tournament, especially if this will be your first one.
As the NBA’s billionaire owners and millionaire players continue to argue over money with no end in sight, the league’s fans are left without any professional basketball to turn to. Though it may seem like a poor consolation prize, NBA 2K12 is still coming out this year for all of the platforms you would expect. This year, 2K has taken their award-winning basketball experience on the go with an iPhone version. Will this portable solution be enough to sooth your desire for an actual NBA season?
Around the time of its release on the DS, Scribblenauts was one of my most anticipated games. The core concept of a game that lets you conjure up anything you can think of in order to solve a puzzle seemed brilliant to me. Thanks to its core concept, the game and its sequel became smash hits. However, due to it being on the DS (a system I gave up on awhile ago) and due to some complaints about the game’s unwieldy controls. Despite that, I’ve always wanted to give it a shot if the platform and price were right.
To my surprise, 5th Cell recently released Scribblenauts Remix on iOS for the price of $4.99. I was all over it in a heartbeat. Did it live up to my expectations?
With Batman: Arkham City set to hit stores in just a few days, I though it’ d be a great opportunity to dig deep into the In Third Person archives to pull out some legacy Batman: Arkham Asylum content. My thoughts on the demo and the full game were some of the very first posts I wrote when I started this up in 2009, and it even got an honourable mention during my game of the year 2009 post.

Yes! After months of waiting, Phoenix Wright has been finally revealed in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. As a huge fan of the Phoenix Wright series, I was really excited/curious to see how Capcom would incorporate a non-violent lawyer into a fighting game with super heroes and other-worldly fighting machines, but the new trailer has answered my questions. Do you remember the Gears of War Mad World commercial? Up until that point, the game had been presented as a ‘dudebro’ shooter with all of the emphasis on its revolutionary cover mechanics and stop-and-pop shooting. Then the Mad World commercial hit television and it presented the game as something more emotionally charged. Unfortunately, it was all for the sake of advertising, as none of that Mad World feeling ended up making it into the game. Gears of War 2 sort of tried to capture that, but those few attempts came off as unintentionally funny.
While Marcus and company weave through bombastic firefights and kill all varieties of alien lifeforms in Gears of War 3, it actually manages to capture that Mad World feeling in a number of spots. In one particular case, it literally captures it, but that’s going way into spoiler-territory. Let’s back up and talk about this new, improved and somewhat more emotional Gears of War 3.
When I first completed the original Portal not too long ago, I did not feel the need to experience any more of it. Sure, Portal is a fantastic game, but within the three or so hours it took me to complete it, I felt like the game had said everything it needed to say. Although I was crazy late to the party and Portal 2 had been out for months, I wasn’t sure what Valve would do to keep the experience going without tarnishing the legacy of the original.
The last time I opened up my Mad Catz TE, I switched out a broken button with a brand new one. This time, I swapped out the joystick. After hundreds of hours of use, it didn’t feel as crisp as it used to. If you’ve been holding your a breath for my Gears of War 3 review, you can exhale. No, this isn’t it and no, I’m not close to having one ready. Though my progress through the game was stilted by my practice for T12: Toronto Fighting Game Championships, I’ve now got some time to make progress.
