Pick-Up Post: Uncharted 3

Yesterday, I picked up my copy of Uncharted 3, the biggest PlayStation 3 exclusive title this year. I have not had a chance to play it yet, but for sure I will be zoning out and playing a bunch of it today. As a huge fan of Uncharted 2, I can’t wait to jump back into the shoes of Nathan Drake and take on whatever may come my way.

Of course, a review will be on the way once I’ve played enough of it. For the time being, feel free to check out all of the other great content on In Third Person, or leave me a comment about Uncharted 3 or whatever you may feel like talking about.

Canada Cup 2011 Fighting Game Tournament Starts Today!

Starting today, the Canada Cup 2011 fighting game tournament takes place in Calgary, Alberta. For you Calgary-based In Third Person readers who will be attending this event, or out-of-towners traveling in for this, I hope you have a blast. What makes this particular major fighting game tournament stand out from the rest is the inclusion of an international 5-on-5 team tournament, featuring 8 teams filled with top players from around the world. Credit where credit is due, it was my girlfriend Steff who first told me about the 5-on-5. With that tidbit of info, I would shortly forget it, find out about it again in the news, then tell Steff about the 5-on-5 as if she didn’t already tell me this. Whoops. In spite of my blunder, Steff is genuinely interested in watching the 5-on-5 tournament with me, which is super cool.

Dance Central 2 Review

Of all the Kinect games to have hit the market prior to the release of Dance Central 2, only its predecessor has been able to justify the existence of the peripheral to me. The implementation of real-life dancing as a gameplay mechanic was not only revolutionary from a technology perspective, but wildly fun for gamers and financially successful for Harmonix.

Though I reviewed the original Dance Central favourably for the most part when it first came out, it was not without fault. It’s biggest failings were that it didn’t make for a great multiplayer game and that its feature set was paper-thin, which is often a problem with launch games. Does the sequel build on its predecessor to provide a more complete dancing game experience?

Heat Check: Grand Theft Auto IV


Times were different when Rockstar Games first revealed Grand Theft Auto IV. At the time, GTA was the biggest gaming franchise around, and I remember the hype surrounding that first reveal being astronomical.  Earlier this week, Rockstar Games released the first Grand Theft Auto V trailer and I don’t think the world at large cared nearly as much this time around. Movember 2012 Special: More of Gaming’s Best Moustaches

On a whim last year, I decided to write a mildly humourous post about video game moustaches to help promote Movember, a movement in which men grow out their facial hair to raise awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer. To my surprise, it ended up being the second most visited post of all-time on In Third Person. I have no way of measuring this, but I hope that the original post somehow made a positive impact on Movember.

Thanks to the success of the original, I thought it wouldn’t hurt to revisit the subject. There are a ton of gaming moustaches worth talking about, so why not? If you’d like to partake or donate to Movember, check out the website for more information.

Coming Soon: Dance Central 2 Review

Are you ready to bust a move? The sequel to last year’s breakout Kinect hit is out now, and my brother picked up a copy of it late last week. At this point, I have not shaken my booty enough to write a full review but rest assured it’s on the way.

Now if you will excuse me, I have to prove to the haters why this Jett is so Fly Like A G6. Yes, that was a terrible pun and yes, I’m sorry.

My Disdain Towards Video Game Trailers

In 2011, no video game trailer made more waves or garnered as much attention as the Dead Island announcement trailer. As far as video game trailers go, this haunting and beautiful piece is one of the best video game trailers ever made. Thanks to this trailer, the game built up a tremendous amount of pre-release buzz and ultimately sold really well.

Say what you will about the quality of the trailer, but the Dead Island announcement trailer captures a lot of what I hate about video game marketing and advertising. I’ll take this a step even further and say that due to the business practices behind the creation of most video game trailers and commercials, I actively avoid watching them.

Batman: Arkham City Review

With high expectations behind it, it wouldn’t be difficult for the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum to fall short. If anything, it would be easier for Rocksteady to fall short with the sequel than it would be to equal or surpass the original. Arkham Asylum was a fantastic (and arguably revolutionary) game for its time. To this day, I’ll still gush over how amazing that game was (and still is).

Now that the groundwork is set, let’s talk about what people really want to know. Riddle me this, riddle me that, is Batman: Arkham City really all that?

The Possibility of Working in Gaming Journalism

There was a time in my early teens when I thought that being a gaming journalist would be the coolest job in the world. How could a job that requires you to play the latest and greatest video games before they come out not be the coolest job ever? During my younger years of reading the golden age of EGM and Gamepro, I had dreams of being the next Scary Larry or Sushi-X.

In my own way, I’m closer to living that dream than ever. In Third Person is my venue to share my gaming-related writing to the world, which now receives thousands of visits a month. As this site has grown, I’ve seen a number of job postings for writers at some of my favourite gaming websites and blogs. Do I have what it takes to make that jump into gaming journalism? Or more importantly, do I even want to make that jump into gaming journalism?

Jett’s Adventures into Linking and ‘Plinking’ With Street Fighter IV

If you’ve ever played Super Street Fighter IV’s trial mode, then odds are you’ve run into the type of challenge displayed above. After the challenge mode covers each character’s special moves, they go into a section on link combos. Pictured above is Cammy’s level 8 trial, which asks you to combo crouching hard punch into crouching medium kick. For the uninitiated, this seems like something that would be very easy to do. After hours of switching from character-to-character to see if these would get any easier, I gave up in frustration. I thought I was the worst Street Fighter player of all-time for not being able to make two button presses combo into each other. However, as I started to investigate, it turns out there’s a lot more to this than simply hitting two buttons in succession.
