10 Years of In Third Person – Impact

Every now and then, I think about this one hip-hop site I used to visit in the late 90s. It was run by one guy who updated his site almost daily with album reviews, news, editorials, and stories of his personal life. After a few years, he put up a post saying that he was pulling down the site. In an age long before social media, he essentially erased himself from the internet, never to be seen again.

He may have just been one person running a hip-hop site from his bedroom without an audience other than me, but he made an impact on my life through his work. He opened my ears to music that I wouldn’t have listened to otherwise. I cared about his well-being when he lost his job and was concerned when he got suspended for performing a rap song at a school talent show that was apparently a bit too heavy on the coarse language. It was one of the first times I felt a connection to someone through their online work.

Having done this now for a decade, it makes me wonder if I’ve had that kind of impact on those who read this.

Downwell Review

How low can you go? It won’t be easy with all of the enemies and obstacles in your way, but the guns strapped to your feet sure do help. Downwell challenges you traverse through a series of randomly-generated tunnels with only the ability to walk, jump, and shoot directly below you.

Reasons Why Fire Emblem: Three Houses May Not Be the Best in the Series

Riding a wave of critical acclaim and positive word-of-mouth, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is shattering franchise sales records all over the world. Becoming the best-selling game in the series is an inevitability at this point. But does that make it the best?

It might be when it’s all said and done. However, I’m reluctant to give it the crown just yet. As much as I love it, here are some factors that could prevent it from being the undisputed best in the series.

How Ring Fit Adventure Addresses the Mistakes of Wii Fit

I struggle with exercising for the sake of exercising. As ridiculous as this may sound, the idea of running or lifting weights for the sake of improving my health isn’t enough of a motivator for me to move. Give me a basketball and a hoop though, and I will play till my body gives out. Or give me a smartphone with Pokemon Go, and I will walk more than I normally would. To-date, my in-game tracker says that I’ve walked 4,600+km since the game launched in 2016.

Wii Fit sort of tried to gamify the act of exercise through mini games. However, I bounced off of it quickly because it felt more like an exercise tool than a game or activity. Ring Fit Adventure – Nintendo’s latest entry into exercise games – looks to take the gamification of fitness to the next level.

My Favourite Nintendo 3DS Games

Confession: I don’t like the Nintendo 3DS. Heck, I’d go as far as saying I never liked the Nintendo 3DS. Hot off the heels of the phenomenal DS Lite, it failed to capture my interest like its predecessor due to a 3D gimmick that proved pointless and a software library that was sorely underwhelming. Even before the release of the Nintendo Switch, I had largely abandoned the platform.

While Nintendo may say that the Nintendo 3DS will carry on in spite of the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch Lite, I think that now is a great time for me to close my book on this era of handheld gaming. I may not have liked the hardware or the catalogue as a whole, but there were some incredible games that blessed the Nintendo 3DS with their presence. In no particular order, here are my favourite Nintendo 3DS games!

Amiibo Figures and Video Game Object Photography

Years ago, I wrote a piece about my Sheik Amiibo. As part of that post, I hastily took a picture of Sheik and Zelda standing together. Not thinking much about the artistic merits of the shot itself, they were placed on top of a fighstick with a picture of Spider-Man and I in the background.

Years later, while mining my archives for content to post on the In Third Person Instagram account, I found that picture. I showed it to my wife and asked her, “Hey, what if I post this picture with the caption, ‘Two sides to every story’?”. She replied, “Can you bring those Amiibos to me?”
