Review: Candy Train

The makers of Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies are back! Sort of. From PopCap Games 4th and Battery division comes Candy Train, a universal app for the iPhone and iPad that is free as I type this. I’m not sure if that’s going to change by the time you read this. In any case, if you have either of those devices and the app is still free, you don’t need me to give you a review. Just go grab it already and come to your own conclusion. If you’d still like to hear what I’d think, then I’m not stopping you from reading my review, either.

Review: X-Men Arcade for iPhone and iPad

Hot on the heels of the release of X-Men: First Class comes the return of X-Men Arcade. Earlier this year, it made it’s return on XBOX Live and PlayStation Network, which I reviewed when it came out. This time, it’s out as a universal app for the iPhone and iPad. Though a lot of what I said about X-Men Arcade initially still stands for this port, the iOS version does have some perks and quirks worth noting in a separate review.

Girlfriend Gaming: Bop It on the iPhone Review

My girlfriend Steff is really good at Bop It. I should further qualify that statement by saying that Steff is not 8 years old. All kidding aside, it was one of her favourite toys growing up and she’s still good at it today. Having used a Bop It in the last few months, I’m lucky if I can score 40, while she can hit 100 in her sleep.

Being the loving boyfriend that I am, I gifted her Bop It on the iPhone shortly after it came out. Did it meet my Bop It champion’s standards?

Fight Night Champion for iPhone Review

EA’s iPhone offerings have been awesome of late. Though I’ve been reluctant to buy NBA Jam and Dead Space 2 on the current generation of consoles for $60, I’ve had no problem buying NBA Jam and Dead Space on the iPhone for a fraction of the cost. Both of those games were great examples of taking home gaming experience and translating it into a mobile platform.

I was hoping that Fight Night Champion would follow suit. I love the series, but a game-breaking glitch I ran into with Fight Night Round 4 makes me reluctant to pick up Champion on console. However, I have no problem giving the iPhone game a shot at $5. Is this iPhone port a knock out?

NBA Jam for iPhone Review

Within days of announcing that NBA Jam for iPhone was on the way, EA released the game to the iTunes store. Unlike NBA Live 10, which was a heavily watered-down version of the console game, NBA Jam on the iPhone stays relatively close to the recent console games. This mobile package includes essentially the same graphics, same sounds, and most importantly, the same exciting gameplay, in a format you can take with you anywhere.

Top 3 iPhone Games On Sale This Valentine’s Day

With a major holiday coming up, many iPhone game publishers are once again slashing the prices on a number of their games. Before writing this feature, I went nuts and bought a ton of games myself, many of which I will write about in the near future. If you’re looking to load up on iPhone games for yourself (or gift to a loved one) and don’t know where to start, I’d say start with my recommendations in this post.

Boomshakalaka! NBA Jam is Coming to the iPhone

NBA Jam was one of my favourite video games growing up. I was sad to see it fade into obscurity as new versions of the game watered down the formula, but I was pumped to get my hands on the NBA Jam reboot, which came out on Wii, PS3 and XBOX 360 last year. While I liked what I played of it, the new game didn’t strike me as something I’d be willing to pay full price for at this point in time.

Luckily for me, NBA Jam is now coming out on iPhone.

NHL 2K11 for iPhone Review

NHL 94 is one of my all-time favourite sports video games. I have fond memories of playing this game for dozens of hours with friends. Many years later, when I got a Super Nintendo again, I made sure to pick up a copy of NHL 94, which to me, still holds up as a fun game to play. I understand that video game hockey has progressed greatly in the last 15 years, but as a non-hockey fan (and as someone who hasn’t played a hockey game since then…yet), that game is still good enough for me.

I was sold on NHL 2K11 on the iPhone when I played the lite version. Almost instantly, I realized that it played a lot like NHL 94. After a few minutes with the demo, I shelled out the $0.99 for it and have been playing it since.

Pick-Up Post: Dead Space on the iPhone

With Dead Space 2 hitting stores this week, it’s easy to forget (or miss completely) the fact that Dead Space also came out on iPhone at the same time. Though the console sequel will likely get all of the hype and the love, I think this game is definitely worth some attention of its own.
