iPhone Games: I’ll Buy That For a Dollar

Historically, we haven’t been able to get very much for a dollar when it comes to video games. Games on physical media sold for $1 at a store are likely not worth the materials they’re made from. At the arcade, a dollar in this economy will get you one play on most games, which will likely last you no more than two minutes.

Over the past few weeks, the majority of my gaming purchases have cost me only a dollar on the iTunes store. If you’ve got an iDevice, a dollar can go a long way.

Pick Up Post: Join the Darkside

Back in January, this THQ game caught a lot of people by surprise. People who were expecting it to be a God of War clone were surprised at how Zelda-like it’s gameplay was. It reviewed well and as far as I know, sold above the company’s expectations.

For a number of reasons, I kept tabs on it until it came down to a lower price. A few weeks ago, it hit $20, and I grabbed my local Best Buy’s last copy.

Pick Up Post: Jam TE

My birthday just passed yesterday. While I’m past the point of gift-hording from everyone I know, my girlfriend was wonderful enough to spoil me on my special day. I got a few CDs, a 13-month subscription to XBOX Live and the piece of awesome picture above that you can read about if you hit the link.

Why Shopping At Indie Video Games Stores Rocks

Buying video games is not very hard to do. Outside of the usual suspects such as Gamestop and EB Games, you can purchase a copy of the newest Halo game at most electronic stores, department stores, music stores, video rental stores and more. When it’s time for me to purchase a game, I generally just buy from the closest or cheapest store. With that said, I much prefer the shopping experience in an independent video game store and I try and support these stores as often as possible.

Pick Up Post: Indestructable

After a year of damn-near uncontrollable anticipation, the sequel to my 2009 game of the year is now in my house. I was actually so excited for this, I was at Walmart at 7:00 AM buying this game, even though I wouldn’t get to play it till after work. After putting in about 20 hours this week into it (and waking up this morning with an arthritic right hand due to all the fighting action) I can positively say this game is good. In fact, it’s SUPER (sorry).

Pick Up Post: I Got The Magic Stick

After months of deliberation, I have finally decided to purchase an arcade joystick. With the release of Super Street Fighter IV happening in a few days (and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 having just been announced), I figured now would be the right time to finally give this arcade joystick thing a shot. As a long-time pad player who has always struggled with joysticks in the arcade, this is a bit of a risky investment. The market for joysticks varies wildly, as the prices can go as low as $30 and as high as $200 for products that do the exact same thing. All of the joysticks also vary wildly in features, build quality and the ability to fix/mod the joystick yourself.

As much as I would like to immediately jump to the top-of-the-line MadCatz TE stick, I’m not ready to invest $200 on a controller that I may never find as comfortable as a regular controller. With everything taken into consideration, I ended up putting down the money on this arcade joystick.

Pick Up Post: Cobra Clutch

Earlier this week, I found myself hanging out at my local EB Games while my mom was at the Lenscrafters across the mall. After cycling through their inventory with my brother, we talked to the on-duty cashier, who just happened to be my brother’s friend. I had come into the store with no intentions to buy anything, but he made me an offer on a game I couldn’t refuse.

Pick Up Post: This Treasure Better Be Worth It

On Saturday, I took a visit to one of my favourite independent video game retailers with my girlfriend because we just happened to be in the area. After circling around the store and trying out Blazblue on the PSP, a game in the bargain bin caught my eye, which I immediately picked up.

Blockbuster Finale

With the Blockbuster clearance sale winding down (buy a $9.99 game and get a $4.99 game free), I took one more trek across a number of Blockbuster stores in my area in hopes of snagging a few more cheap games to beef up my collection. It was plain to see that I was scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point, as 99% of the games remaining are probably better used as coasters. Still, I was able to pick up three more good games that I think are well worth the total I spent on them.

Find out what two games I got, a roundup of everything I’ve grabbed from Blockbuster of late and how much it all cost. The final tally is pretty impressive.

Making It Another Blockbuster Night

Yesterday, while on my way to my girlfriend’s house, I passed by another Blockbuster. Having pillaged every Blockbuster in my city, I decided to check out the Blockbuster close to her house to see if I can find some gems in their clearance bin. While their selection had no shortage of old sports games, generic shooters and crappy movie-based games, I did pick up some stuff and there were other games worth noting.

Hit the break to see what I found.
