Gaming-Related Christmas Gifts I Received: 2011 Edition

Hope your holidays were full of cheer, turkey and great gifts. At my age, Christmas is definitely more about giving than receiving, though I did receive some excellent gifts this year from the ones I love. Since this is a gaming blog most of the time, I thought I’d share with you what I found under my Christmas tree. I’d love to hear what you got for Christmas in the comments, too!

In Third Person Updates To Meet 1994 Standards and Adds a Top Navigation

Back in the early days of In Third Person, I never imagined that it would become a repository of hundreds of different posts serving thousands of visitors a month. While the growth has been great, the site was kind of a nightmare to navigate around if you’re not interested in reading what’s on the first page.

Thankfully, I’ve finally figured out how to use the WordPress menu editor to add a top navigation to the site, which should make finding legacy content in popular categories easier to find.

With the new year in full effect, I’d like to look into making some improvements to the site and my processes to make the experience better for everyone. Is there anything you’d like to see improved? A better site design? Review scores? More feature-related posts? Something else? Let me know in the comments!

In Third Person’s 2011 Year in Blogging Report From WordPress

2011 was a landmark year from In Third Person. After the WordPress home page plug in September 2010, this blog could have easily slipped back into obscurity, only to be viewed by 5-10 people a day. Instead you readers kept visiting, commenting and sharing In Third Person content to make it a far bigger deal than I could have ever imagined. Thank you for making this site as successful as it is! Let’s make 2012 even better šŸ™‚

Also worth thanking is WordPress. Besides being a great platform to blog on and the promo in 2010, they sent me a very cool In Third Person annual report.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Syndey Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 50,000 times in 2011. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 19 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Anything on this report stand out to you? I’d love to hear your thoughts and analysis in the comments!

Girlfriend Gaming: Steff’s Pick for Game of the Year 2011

In Third Person’s 2011 Game of the Year

Choosing a game of the year is never easy. Each year, we’re blessed with tons of great games, and to choose just one above the rest is very tough. Case in point: I copped out last year and picked two games as my “games of the year” for different reasons, but never definitively picked one over the other. I’m sure that the process for selecting a game of the year can be even harder for major gaming publications, who have to weight out multiple opinions before coming to a ‘definitive’ conclusion.

Having played many of this year’s biggest releases, I did a lot of soul-searching in order to choose a game I feel is worth of the game of the year distinction. When it was all said and done, I came to a conclusion. Was it Batman: Arkham City? Uncharted 3? Portal 2? Could it be another big release I haven’t listed here? Or maybe I went completely out of left field with my choice?

Without further ado, In Third Person’s 2011 game of the year is…

Happy Holidays from In Third Person

Whatever it is that you’re celebrating during this time of the year, I wish you all the best. Here’s to hoping your holidays are full of cheer, great food and good times with those you love. Also, video games. Hope you get all the games you wished for and that you get a ton of time to play them.

As for me, I will be taking a break of sorts from my blogging duties. For the next few days, I’m primarily going to focus on enjoying the impending good times. However, I’ll also be taking the time off of blogging to prepare some In Third Person content for next year.

When can you expect me back? I’ll be back on New Year’s Eve for In Third Person’s game of the year and posting regularly from then on. Till then, enjoy your holidays, feel free to dig into the In Third Person archives if you’d like to catch up on some of my older posts, and come back when the regular posts ramp up again on New Year’s Eve!

World Warrior Diary: My Recent Chronicles of Super Street Fighter IV Tragedy and Triumph

I still reflect back on my experience at T12: Toronto Fighting Game Championships. As a serious fighting game player, it’s hard not to reflect back on the things that went well and the things that didn’t at the biggest tournament of my life to date. In particular, I came out of T12 really disappointed with my performance in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. Sure, I got embarrassed by Chi Rithy (pictured above) on the Team Spooky stream for thousands to see, but my saltiness coming out of that event was more deeply rooted than that. Despite the fact that I’ve played over 1,000 hours of Street Fighter IV since 2009, I felt like I was one of the weakest Street Fighter competitors there based on the level of play I saw and my poor Street Fighter record on that day.

That experience was enough to reinvigorate my interest in Street Fighter IV and my desire to be the best I can be.
